Well, this is novel: a band from Sweden playing American (Florida) Death Metal. Wonders will never cease in this crazy Metalscape we all find ourselves in, and that's likely a good thing because "Path Of Fire", the newest release from Sweden's AEON smokes and smoulders like the very pits of Hell from which it is likely cast.
Playing close to the hip and straight from the heart, while always being mindful of a spiked gauntlet, AEON invoke the very best of Florida Death Metal. The ferocity with which these Swedes attack the form is refreshing, like being soaked in innocent blood at one's first ritual killing. They play fast, loose and groovy and display an intricate understanding of just what it means to be a True Death Metal band without pomp and without the sort of polished panache infiltrating the scene as of late. No, friends, AEON is dirty, and your mother warned you.
All things considered there is no scorching earth behind this one, and the album in and of itself will not have anyone, critic or fan, claiming that AEON are the saviours of Death Metal. But "Path Of Fire" will have everyone whipping their heads around ‘til brain damage, and that, in the minds of many, is a quality more worthwhile than forcing past accepted boundaries. Sometimes Occam's Razor really does work.
