"Animals As Leaders" is the debut instrumental outing by solo musician Tosin Abasi. It was conceived at the fall of his original band, REFLUX, and explores many different aspects of various Metal sub-genres. However, be forewarned - this piece of work is an exceptionally deep and progressive art gallery, and it requires a very unique and dedicated audience for an appreciation of its expansive potential.
At first listen, Tosin Abasi's style is virtually identical to that of Mattias Eklundh's (of the Progressive Rock band, FREAK KITCHEN). The main difference between this solo project and Eklundh's FREAK GUITAR outfit is that Abasi manages to capture a sense of beauty, rather than falling prey to the campy or slapstick atmospheres that plague most of Eklundh's work. There are even tidbits of the Psychedelic intertwined in the music, quite reminiscent of PORCUPINE TREE. While the overall sound maintains a serious tone throughout, the disc still manages to offer an absolute smorgasbord of guitar techniques and speedy experimental twists in every track. The sheer intensity of Abasi's masterpiece shines in (literally) every note he plays.
Unfortunately, there are many Metal fans that will not be able to appreciate this album for what it is, simply because it is purely an instrumental venture. To fully recognize its magnificence requires one's complete attention as it plays at a significantly high volume, and perhaps some familiarity with the Solo Instrumental genre as well. Nevertheless, Abasi's skills and dedication to detail are undeniable, and a certain level of respect is due to the creator no matter what your musical preferences may be. If Instrumental Metal is your bag of tea, ANIMALS AS LEADERS is quite a concoction of flavors.
