Those unfamiliar with AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE and didn't bother to look at the song titles or the album art, it's a Death-friendly Crossover Arnie-Metal project from Tim Lambesis (AS I LAY DYING). Basically Tim quotes either Arnold movies or Political speeches or just riffs about classic and not so classic Arnold movies. It's a bad joke that actually shows Lambesis' full time band is an even worse joke.
Those that don't like so-so Arnold impressions (courtesy of Chad Ackerman, DESTROY THE RUNNER), pre-school humor, Crossover Thrash, Hardcore, Death Metal or Arnold movies need not apply. Those that want less than serious Metal and enjoy all things Arnie may find a lot to enjoy on "Double Brutal". Governator and improper annunciation jokes aside, the music on "Double Brutal" is pretty good. Most songs rarely pass the 2-minute mark, and that is a good thing. There also are a few longer songs - over three minutes - but there also is a pretty good chunk of filler and segues between songs where the Arnold impersonator rambles about stuff like cookies. Unfortunately there are a few breakdowns and said breakdowns stink more than the movie about Arnold being pregnant.
What also reeks is that 90% of the material here doesn't really warrant a repeat listen. Heard it once, you've heard it all. Sure, there are some really good solos and a handful of killer riffs, but the endless Arnie lyrics, song intros and jokes get really stale really fast. But when compared to Lambesis' full time project, AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE has some serious chops. So in an attempt to keep the novelty going as long as possible without causing any 'Roid rages, disc two features covers from bands like METALLICA, MEGADETH, JUDAS PRIEST, AGNOSTIC FRONT and even THE MISFITS. Instead of songs about Arnold, Lambesis and Arnie engage in duets with songs that kind of pertain to Arnold movies. Imagine MOTÖRHEAD's "Iron Fist" pumped up a bit and featuring a chorus by Arnold. No joke! "I Turned Into A Martian" is absolutely awful, but "Killing is My Business...And Business Is Good" is actually comical, and the theme to T2 is killer. Go figure.
This doesn't need to be heard to be believed. The fact AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE has a second, let alone double album is unbelievable. But this really doesn't need to be heard by anyone that doesn't own a worn out VHS copy of "Red Sonja". Those that are curious about some semi-decent Crossover or have money to burn on novelty Metal, by all means check this out. Do it, do it now. But you have been warned that this is better than AS I LAY DYING and the lack of worthy repeat listens on "Double Brutal" is the only thing really brutal here.
