Yet another release to add to my 'pleasant surprise' file. Hailing from the working-class streets of Syracuse, New York of all places, BRAND NEW SIN (Kenny Dunham/guitar, Chuck Kahl/bass, Joe Altiuer/vocals, Kevin Dean/drums, and Kris Wiechmann/guitar) deliver here one of the best damned 'Suvvern Rawk' albums I've ever had the pleasure of hearing! That's right. 'Recipe For Disaster' (followup to the S/T debut of not long back) is anything but; more aptly a recipe for predestined, organic success as these tattooed, brawlin' bikers usurp the throne once held by acts as diverse as THE FOUR HORSE MEN and CIRCUS OF POWER (not to mention MOTÖRHEAD and LYNYRD SKYNYRD!), to more recently the likes of COC, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY, and DOWN amongst others as leather-clad, shotgun-totin', buckshot-spittin' rulers of all that is melodically manical, and downtunedly blues-n'-beer-soaked in the wide and diverse world of Rock 'n Roll.
And truly classic - if modern and refreshed - Rock 'n Roll is the order of the day here, BNS achieving qualifying status as 'Metal' only in terms of their sheer weight, heft of hook, and gift of riff, as - again already stated - their real reason to be. While definitely clad proudly in denim 'n leather and possessed of one steely collective glance, these guys' whole world is still more accurately born of the three-chord bar-blues-turned-up-loud-tradition than it is by anything be-dungeoned, dragoned, or otherwise mailclad and questing of Valhallian glories. And that's fine by me as there is I think in every Metal heart that humid, Dixie-draped realm where honestly, a man just wants to kick up his spurs, flex his knuckles, crack a bottle o' Bud and leer at a tight ass in a pair of 'Daisy Dukes' through a pair of steel-glinted mirror-shades.
Kicking things off with the boogy-woogying shuffle of 'Arrived', the boys in BNS drag the unwary, hungover listener through a grand 13-track riff-wonderland of high-octane, tight-as-hell, hard rocking intensity that never lets up even in lighter moments as on the DOWNish 'Once In A Lifetime'. There are just so many great tracks on offer here, fuelled by the low-grade, yet undeniably powerful unleaded riffs and solos of Dunham and Wiechmann who possess a studied ear for infectious hooky dual leadwork, and solid, crunchingly memorable riffs that stick like gumbo to the memory. I mean really...how can you go wrong with 'Brown Street Betty', the pummeling 'Black And Blue', 'Freight Train', and the rabble-rousing 'Dead Man Walking' to name but a few instantly likeable, enjoyable slabs of riffage that await here!?! It's like these guys are channeling the spirit of "Dimebag" Darrell or have at least drank a shot or two of Lemmy's sweat or something!!!
Add to this rumbling engine the solid rhythm section of Kahl and Dean and last, but never least, the charismatic presence of lead-throat Joe Altier who bellows and croons in brilliant form like a cross between Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, and Frank C. Starr (R.I.P.) and you have one seething, hell-raisin' beast of an entity intent only upon making you drain the bottle, eat the worm, and getting your knuckles bloody.
While the core 'Blues-based Rock' sound is far from an original idea, it is a timeless one that can be revisited again and again when performed with fire and heart. BRAND NEW SIN have both in an ace of spades and have managed to refresh, revitalize, and - quite frankly - ass-kick the form into black 'n blue, bone-broken oblivion on this brilliant sophomore release. 'Recipe For Disaster' is probably one of the best times you will have in 2005 in terms of hard-rockin', hard-drinkin', hard-fightin' Rawk/'Metal'. So don't think...drink...and listen to BRAND NEW SIN's tasty 'Recipe For Disaster'. YEEE-HAW!!!
