Germany's DEADSOIL are yet another entry into the increasingly crowded metalcore genre. With their latest CD, they have released an album that is insanely intense, and has the ability to crush with its non-stop aggression. Formed in 2002 by guitarist Boris Pracht (ex-COPYKILL) and drummer Christian Bass (ex-NIGHT IN GALES), the band went through a couple of lineup changes before Pracht and Bass, along with Jens Basten (guitars), Stefan Eutebach (bass), and Freidrich Weber (vocals), recorded their second album (and Lifeforce Records debut), "The Venom Divine". After touring with the likes of HATEBREED, THE HAUNTED, and DEW SCENTED, the band had honed their metalcore chops. The album is a solid slab of metalcore, with decent performances by all involved. The 10 songs spit hatred and venom, with "Hate" probably being the one that will get the greatest response when it's played live.
Though this is a decent release, there is really not a lot about "The Venom Divine" that would keep me coming back. I find with the metalcore genre that there are times when the songs seem to blend together. No one song really stands out from the others. I find that to be the case here and it makes reviewing an album a little difficult without becoming repetative. A little variety in the songs would go a long way. As well, the production is a little muddled here relegating the guitars to the near-background as the vocals and drums take over. The performances are good, but the non-stop screaming does getting tiring after a couple of listens. I don't know that this album would receive repeated listens from too many people.
DEADSOIL do have the capacity to have a good career, but they face a large obstacle - how to make people remember them. The songs are alright, but there is nothing here to differentiate them from the pack. There are a lot of metalcore bands competing for audience attention these days, and with so many to choose from, you have to do something differently in order to stand out. DEADSOIL are angry, and they have the aggression down pat, but there are a lot of similar bands that seem to do the same thing.
If you are a fan of bands like HATEBREED (seems like HATEBREED are always mentioned in reviews for the metalcore genre...), and you're in the mood to check out a new band, then you would do alright with DEADSOIL. This is a standard example of the metalcore genre - not bad, not great, and not groundbreaking.
