Dutch symphonic gothic metallers DELAIN are relative newcomers to the scene, but they possess a musical prowess that is far too interesting to ignore. While many bands follow a certain guideline in terms of this style, DELAIN do it better and make it their own. They do bear some resemblance to well-known like counterparts (ie: EPICA) by opting for the female-fronted vocalist and all, but they don't go for the carbon-copy approach. Instead, they use their combined creative sense to pave the way for some great, great melodic music.

Originally a studio project started by ex-WITHIN TEMPTATION keyboardist Martin Westerholt, DELAIN is now considered to be a fully-functioning band with a solid lineup soiled with potential. Of course, the resemblance to WITHIN TEMPTATION is crystal clear, but obviously that's to be expected with Westerholt at the helm. Hints of NIGHTWISH's sound might whisk into your mind as well when you listen to this, but don't let that dampen your curiosity.

"April Rain", the band's second album, takes the listener on a musical journey across a smorgasbord of melodic landscapes. The epic opening title track is a true example of what DELAIN is all about, combining powerful, uplifting vocals with bombastic rhythms. Charlotte Wessels' beautiful, angelic voice transcends emotion in every possible way, and her ability to hit ranges from different angels must be heard. "Stay Forever", "I'll Reach You" and "On The Other Side" are powerful ballads with plenty of choral arrangements, while others like "Invidia" and "Go Away" speeds things up. One of the most exciting tracks on the album, "Virtue And Vice", sees Wessels providing more of her mesmerizing vocal talent, and features some unexpected, killer growling courtesy of guitarist Ronald Landa. Another surprise surfaces here too with NIGHTWISH bassist Marco Hietala lending his distinct voice to "Control The Storm" with authority, and again in "Nothing Left".

Symphonic Metal has made its way into the mainstream for quite some time now and doesn't appear to be going anywhere. In fact, it's a welcomed addition as a viable sub-genre in a style of music that just keeps evolving and diversifying itself year after year, thanks to the combined talent of those who play it. DELAIN are also doing their part to strengthen Metal with their own music. Even though they have potentially many albums left in them, "April Rain" is just what DELAIN need at the present time to take their career to the next level. The sound quality is excellent, the songs are tight and the music flows smoothly. Brutal Death Metal fans might want to stick with some CANNIBAL CORPSE or SUFFOCATION, but if symphonic Metal is your thing, this will be right up your alley.
