After having created an extensive catalogue of Thrash albums for 23 years, the power trio of DESTRUCTION has decided to release a best of album that would include all their classics. Unlike their previous double "best of" album made available in 1992 and including a total of twenty seven songs selected from the first six album of their career, this time around bassist/frontman Schmier and his acolytes decided to record all the tracks picked for this release all over again. The idea behind it was probably to refresh their old fan base as well as potentially convert some new fans.

Needless to say that when it actually comes to delivering "Thrash Anthems", the German Thrash pioneers have not lost a bit of their stamina. On the contrary, as I've mentioned in the past, as years go by, DESTRUCTION's sound seems to become thicker and fuller and it goes without saying that, with this new album, they have never sounded this good before. As the furious "Bestial Invasion" opens in the most aggressive manner to be followed by "Profanity" and "Release From Agony", this album will impress more than one. However the ultimate test, at least as far as I'm concerned, was to hear the new version of one of the all time favorites, "Mad Butcher" and just to quote Sasha Cohen on his comedy masterpiece Borat, the verdict would be "Great Success"!!

From the haunted screams and pounding of bass of front-man Schmier to the ultra sharp riffs of guitarist Mike (just listen to "Cracked Brain" or "Life Without Sense") who also proves that he pulls off virtuosity with the acoustic intro of "Sign Of Fear". The hyper-blasting ferocity of drummer Marc on "Thrash Anthems" will delight every lucky bastard who ends up buying this album. Classics such as "Reject Emotions" or "Death Trap" as well as "Deposition (Your Heads Will Roll)" have never sounded this evil before. After the skull-crushing "Tormentor", "Unconscious Ruins" and "Curse The Gods" close out the album beautifully, however if you were quick enough to grab the limited digipack edition of this album, you will be able to enjoy "Eternal Ban" as a bonus track.

After listening to the new and improved versions of these classics, it's easier to understand how much influence DESTRUCTION have had over several extreme Metal formations by producing super fast tunes on an ongoing basis. Of course, one way to look at it would be to admit this new release doesn't bring anything new to the game. Nevertheless, picking a title like "Thrash Anthems" would have appeared as extremely ambitious and maybe arrogant for many bands - seems like the most appropriate choice for DESTRUCTION. If most will agree that these 15 tracks could be considered as Thrash anthems, then this Best Of album is a simple reminder of it.
