Brazilian Death Metal purists KRISIUN have paid their dues with a lot of blood and sweat since their inception back in 1993. Unaltered focus, allegiance to their hordes of fans, and the unwillingness to compromise any element of their music has propelled the band to where they are now. It's no secret that the three brothers - Alex Camargo (vocals/bass), Moyses Kolesne (guitar) and Max Kolesne (drums) - form one of the most brutal Death Metal bands around today. No joke. KRISIUN live, breathe, eat and sleep Death Metal and with their crushing new album, "AssassiNation", they have come to the helm of the genre's elite.
The very constructs of "AssassiNation" were forged upon the same foundation as the band's 2000 release, "Conquerors Of Armageddon". At the end of their European tour in the summer of 2005, KRISIUN traveled to Stage One Studios in Borgentreich, Germany to once again work with producer Andy Classen. On familiar ground, the band took somewhat of a trip back to the roots to record their new masterpiece. That being said, one would expect that the final outcome would be something to behold. What an understatement that is.
It's hard to believe that something of this caliber comes from a mere three-piece band, but like their counterparts such as HATE ETERNAL, DESTRUCTION, and SODOM, KRISIUN prove once again that you don't always need quantity to produce quality. The production here is just massive. Unlike some certain albums where you can pick out sounds or elements that you hadn't heard before during multiple listens, everything is layered perfectly to a "T", which enables you to hear everything - every single note, riff, vocal line, cymbal, snare drum, solo, etc. - without any difficulty whatsoever. Absolutely nothing is muffled and all 12 tracks are mixed at proportionate levels.
Simply put, "AssassiNation" is KRISIUN on steroids. It bludgeons you smack dead in the face like a runaway train and then pummels you repeatedly for a good 45 minutes straight. "Bloodcraft" ignites the fire with intense hyper-blast skin bashing, complemented with blistering riffs and Camargo's deafening, demonic growls. The band really show off their talent with precise instrumental/vocal coordination and incredibly tight time changes. "Natural Genocide" has some nice echoing vocal effects and killer axe work. There is so much finger-picking going on during the solos that Moyses' fingers must have bled. "Vicious Wrath" is a pounding steamroller while tracks like "Refusal" and "Father's Perversion" are classic examples of why KRISIUN are one of the most technically-skilled bands in Death Metal.
Then there's "Suicidal Savagery" - holy blast-beats! Max is like an overloaded piston that just won't stop. No triggers here folks, just good old fashioned human feet on overdrive. But the thought persists: how he keeps pounding the snare and bass drum like that without a single flinch is mind-boggling. Not much changes with other destroyers like Decimated" and "United In Deception"; just try and NOT bang your head. The album takes a short break from the battery with the minute-long instrumental, "Doomed", which sees Moyses delivering some stellar stand-alone guitar work, and "Summon", featuring Max playing some Brazilian-styled beats on the bongos. The band also take a run at MOTÖRHEAD's classic, "Sweet Revenge" (from "Bomber"). Camargo does an excellent job of altering his vocal style accordingly to fit the song's theme. Lemmy and Co. will be proud.
Brazil's favorite sons have outdone themselves on this album. Not only have they advanced as musicians, they've also shown that they are not afraid to shake things up a bit while at the same time not straying an inch from their Death Metal roots. A defining moment in Metal's history, "AssassiNation" is KRISIUN's most prestigious release to date and if hell froze over tomorrow you can bet your ass that KRISIUN would be there to execute the meltdown within a matter of minutes.
