Whoa, I don't even know where to start with this one other than to say that this is of the most extreme albums I've heard in a very long time. Throughout LOSA's "The Perfect Moment", the band (Michael Hall - vocals, Chris Ramirez - guitar, Kory Koch - guitar, Joshua Urista - bass, David Hall - drums) never seem like they are satisfied, and to that end, once they seem to settle on a direction, rhythm, or really anything else, they change it. Man, it is so cool to hear something this out of the ordinary, so artsy yet unpretentious, and yet LOSA make it seem effortless. Can this really be their debut? Well, the band did record a 4 song live demo in 2003, but this is their first full-length release.
"Prelude" is really nothing much so you can skip past it and jump to "The Beginning", as this is where the madness really begins and doesn't end until "...Madness (Sentiment Of A Dying Man)". The final track, "Cessation", is a little more atmospheric, which wraps up the album nicely. When listening to this disc, make sure you have your seatbelt securely fastened as it's, well...it's actually a little difficult to describe this tune, or the other songs on the disc, other than to say 'extreme', and definitely not for the feint of heart. I really don't want to get into a 'song-by-song' description in this review as I'm not sure it would do any justice to the extremities. Just go buy the disc, pop it in to your CD player, and get ready!
The album was superbly produced by the band, with the help of Matthew Ellard, and it was mastered by Alan Douches (DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, CONVERGE). As extreme as it is, it still sounds killer. I recommend listening it with headphones, if you dare...
Though I'm not crazy about the artwork or the packaging, LOSA have created one wild, extreme, and excellent ride with "The Perfect Moment". Kudos to them for pushing the envelope to where few have the courage to tread. Fans of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, MASTODON, and DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have yet another reason to rejoice with this excellent release. The metal world needs more bands like LOSA - bands that are willing to challenge the status quo and take extreme music to the next level. Ladies and Gentlemen, LOSA have arrived!
