Hot off a successful North American tour as the opening act for fellow compatriots NIGHTWISH, female-fronted Finnish gothic rock outfit LULLACRY recently released this new five-track EP, "Fire Within", to tide us over until the arrival of the band's new upcoming full-length. The EP contains two new songs, two remakes of older LULLACRY hits, and a cover of W.A.S.P.'s classic, "L.O.V.E. Machine". While most EP's tend to be quite dull, this one is a bitter sweet surprise indeed. Tanja's soothing, luscious, yet powerful voice brings a great sense of vibrancy to the songs and the four players in the band really do a tremendous job of creating the musical backbone.
The title track, "Fire Within", is a great heavy rocker to get things going. The guitar has a real unique distorted sound that gets your attention right off the bat. Tanja's vocals really add the right flavor to the song and her singing ability definitely beats out most of her competitors that are seemingly "dominating" the mainstream these days. In fact, I would be willing to bet my last dollar that if you put her on stage alongside certain pop singers (I will not mention names), Tanja would steal the audience's attention without too much effort. The band do a cover version of W.A.S.P.'s classic hit, "L.O.V.E. Machine". Tanja's presence gives the song a unique style and Sami Vauhkonen and Sauli Kivilahti do a terrific job of reproducing the original guitar sound with their own add-ins as well, not to mention Heavy's creation of the fuzzy bass sound - nice!
"Be My God (Tribal Reprise)" was originally released as the title track of the band's 2001 album featuring former vocalist, Tanya. Here, the band rerecorded this impressive updated version of the song with Tanja on vocals and some additional drum and guitar sounds. The second new one on the EP, "The #1 Rebel", is a real catchy song with some great harmonies, organs, and sliding guitars. "Crucify My Heart Pt. II (Piano Version)" is a scaled-down version of the title track from the band's highly acclaimed 2003 release, "Crucify My Heart". The song has Tanja showing some more of her incredible talent, singing some beautiful melancholic vocals with accompanying piano and keyboard sounds in the background. All I can say is.... Amy Lee, eat your heart out! :)
LULLACRY are currently in the studio recording the follow-up to "Crucify My Heart", which is expected to be released sometime in early 2005. Until then, "Fire Within" is a real sweet treat to keep fans satisfied before the new album comes out. I will also offer some words of encouragement for all those non-metal fans out there: this is a good "intro" album to "get your feet wet" and ease your way into the metal genre. It contains a variety of songs with a mixture of heavy metal, rock, and pop all in one small package. So, take my advice and go out and buy "Fire Within" from LULLACRY. You will be happy you did.
