"Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is the new documentary film directed by Sam Dunn, Scot McFadyen and Jessica Joy Wise. Accompanying its forthcoming DVD release is this, a compilation of 16 various Metal anthems that were stamped into the film's "score". Released by Universal Music Canada, the soundtrack contains several timeless Metal classics by some of the genre's originators, as well as tracks by bands who have built their names within the last decade or so. It goes without saying that trying to jam-pack a single disc full of head-slamming Metal tracks is a near impossible task. How can you when there is so much to choose from? Not possible. However, the selected material on this compilation includes more than enough gold to keep you interested.
One of the best things about this disc is the variety of subgenres. From the early forefathers of Metal/Hard Rock, NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), '80s-styled traditional Metal and Glam Metal to Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Swedish Melodic Death Metal, and even Nu-Metal. There is quite the range here. You have your staple Metal tracks, which really need no introduction; a live version of IRON MAIDEN's "Hallowed Be Thy Name", ACCEPT's classic anthem "Balls To The Wall", BLACK SABBATH's "Heaven And Hell", MOTÖRHEAD's "Killed By Death", VENOM's "Bloodlust" and TWISTED SISTER's immortal "We're Not Gonna Take It". Thrown into the mix are some other defining moments in Metal's history such as SLAYER's "Disciple", ARCH ENEMY's "Silent Wars", LAMB OF GOD's "Laid To Rest", CANNIBAL CORPSE's "Decency Defied", CHILDREN OF BODOM's "Needled 24/7", and a live version of EMPEROR's "Inno A Satana". Aside from the music itself, the packaging includes a foldout booklet with some interesting stuff. On one side is a selection of photos of Dunn taken during his travels across the globe, as well as notes from his journal, and on the flip side is an extensive "History Of Heavy Metal" timeline.
Obviously, the most important element is the music itself, and about 85% of the music contained herein makes this worthwhile. On the other hand, it's important to remember that this is a compilation, not an album. Most avid Metal fans either own or have at least heard the majority of the tracks on this disc. So, look not at this as a necessity. Instead, look at this more as something to remind you why you listen to Metal music in the first place, and this piece of Metal history will not let you forget it.
