MIDDIAN is the new band from former YOB guitarist/vocalist Mike S. On their debut "Age Eternal". MIDDIAN picks up right where YOB left off on their final album "The Unreal Never Lived", amping up their uniquely mystical brand of Doom with some ear-popping anger, while still retaining the ghostly melody that made YOB so intriguing.
There are five tracks - all long, dense, and intricate. Opener "Dreamless Eye" is as evil and twisted a Doom song as you'll find, with Mike S. and company taking what made YOB such a standout in the Stoner/Drone/Sludge circle and injecting it with a healthy, heavy dose of medium-paced violence that's similar to what can be heard from KYLESA and LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR. "The Blood Of Icons" is a masterwork of the form, opening with a serene melody that rumbles and crashes like an ocean carving its way out of a stone dam after centuries of being held back. "Sink To The Center" sounds every bit like the title it bears - layers of Death Metal growls and Black Metal screams smother the colossal riff that is as haunting as it is heavy, incorporating a subtle NEUROSIS element to the Doom Metal slam.
There is not much difference between MIDDIAN and the band that spawned it, YOB. In fact, "Age Eternal" could very well have passed as the next YOB release. So for those of you who mourned the premature loss of one of Everything-Slow's most unique and promising bands, you now have MIDDIAN to exalt atop the empty throne.
