The Middle East's Dubai, nestled within the United Arab Emirates, has become well known as a prominent world economic hub, sporting global icons including the world's only seven star hotel - the Burj Al-Arab, the world's tallest hotel - the Burj Dubai, and the Jebel Ali port, which boasts the largest man made harbor in the world. But now Dubai bears the distinct honor of supplying the world with a global icon of another sort, manifesting as one of the most dominant and capable Extreme Metal incarnations ever to be heard: the mighty NERVECELL.
Bearing in mind inevitable misconceptions pertaining to religion and political climate, it still stands to reason that Rami Mustafa, Barney Ribeiro, and James Khazaal have faced considerably more adversity and impediments than most bands throughout the world in the course of their unwavering endeavor to achieve their aspiration for brutal Metal dominance. And yet such an environment has if anything only strengthened the will, the determination, and the sincere, undiluted inspiration and passion that is an integral part of what has surfaced as one of the decade's most accomplished and prominent Extreme Metal albums, "Preaching Venom". Having stampeded into the global Metal scene on the immediate strength of their 2003 demo "Vastlands Of Abomination" and the crushing 2004 EP "Human Chaos", NERVECELL garnered immediate attention and landed coveted festival appearances alongside the likes of SEPULTURA, MACHINE HEAD, KREATOR, and MOTÖRHEAD. And yet in spite of such laudable accomplishments and an already sound creative foundation, nothing could truly prepare even the most expectant listener for the unrivaled furor and precision that lies in wait within the folds of "Preaching Venom".
Shifting significantly from a more moderately paced Deathrash approach portrayed in the "Human Chaos" EP, "Preaching Venom" is a stark contrast in all its succinct Extreme Metal magnificence with an exceptional transition into a much higher level of technicality through incising high velocity riffing distinction, screaming solo madness, stunningly precise drumming (courtesy of PSYCROPTIC drum master David Haley), and unrivaled venomous vocal fury. Polished to pristine perfection by legendary Polish producers Wojtek and Slawek Wieslawscy (VADER, DECAPITATED) and boasting some of the most impressive album artwork of the year, "Preaching Venom" is easily one of the most well rounded, dynamically engaging and deathly pure Extreme Metal outings to be heard since the golden days of MORBID ANGEL, OBITUARY and MALEVOLENT CREATION.
The inherent talents of Rami, Barney and James have all amplified tenfold in the short time since "Human Chaos" assaulted the masses, channeled sublimely in the eviscerating, precision driven riffing superiority of instant Extreme Metal anthems like "Vicious Circle Of Bloodshed", "Flesh & Memories", "Existence Ceased" and an impressive reworking of the classic "Vastlands Of Abomination". The excellence at play throughout the entire album should serve to leave more than a few awestruck mouths left agape with an itchy trigger finger anxiously hovering back and forth between the volume knob and repeat button. Not only have NERVECELL established themselves as an undeniably legitimate Extreme Metal icon through the brilliance that is "Preaching Venom", but the foundation has been laid for the dawning of a new and hopefully eternal legacy that will linger in the hearts and minds of Metal fans for years to come. A "legacy of suffering" is on the rise, and it will lay waste to all as it carves its way into and through these "Vastlands Of Abomination".
