I must applaud Relapse Records for their Contaminated series of samplers. Thanks to those albums I have discovered some of my favorite bands to date. From NASUM, to SOILENT GREEN, NILE, GADGET and ORIGIN, Relapse continue to bring into the world some of the sickest and most brutal metal ever put to disk. They have done a great job bringing the genre into the forefront of an otherwise unresponsive music public and showcased just what can be achieved with a little drive and determination. Great job!

PIG DESTROYER is a prime example of the power of samplers. There were number of PIG DESTROYER cuts on Contaminated 3.0 all from "Prowler In The Yard". Have you ever been scared while listening to music? "Prowler" with its insane blast riffage, broken-glass gargling vocals and machine gun drum poundings, achieved that and so much more. The record, complete with creepy segues between songs and a sadistic album cover to match made this one of the finest grind records of 2002. And then the lyrics take over. I equate JR's lyrical approach to that of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller - suspenseful, very well thought out and sadistically perverted all at the same time. This stuff will give you nightmares.

"Terrifyer" is a fantastic album and more than satisfying as a "Prowler" precursor. The songs are still deeply routed in grind/blast core, but there is a bit of a punk element trying to pry its way into the mix. These songs are still very brutal, over-the-top and full of blast-beats and speed. Unlike bands that have changed their sound when trying to introduce a new element or approach, PIG DESTROYER seamlessly meld the best of both worlds. This is still a grindcore release. But, when you take into consideration where they have come from, even a drastic departure from their sound would still be more brutal than the majority of their current contemporaries. Think NAPALM DEATH with "Fear, Emptiness and Despair". Not really a grind record compared to their earlier offerings, but still distinctively NAPALM DEATH in every aspect.

The production is very strong, in your face and appropriate for the genre. With all the heaviness and strength of the music it's hard to fathom that they don't utilize the services of a bass player. Few bands have been able to pull off this much ferocity as a three piece (DISCORDANCE AXIS is another great example). Rumor has it their live show is as intense as their music. They should tour a lot more with this record.

The album is a great package that contains two disks. The first audio disk is the record and the second disk is a DVD featuring a 37-minute spoken word / music track, all in 5.1 digital surround sound. What ties the whole album together is the album cover. If a cover ever conveyed the sick, sadistic insanity of a record this one is it. Buy it today and thank me later.
