"Do you like A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS?"
"I can see you do!"
- from "The Wedding Singer"
Replace "A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS" with "FEAR FACTORY" and you might be able to imagine what a conversation with Canada's THREAT SIGNAL would be like. There is more than enough SOILWORK in the melodies that you can't call them a complete derivative of groove Metal icons FEAR FACTORY, but the heavier, chunkier riffs, as well as the keyboard passages, suggest a cribbing of "Demanufacture" era FACTORY.
There is potential here, but right now THREAT SIGNAL just comes off as another young band feeling themselves out for the right fit. The tracks "One Last Breath" and "Seeing Red" are literally every Melodic Core song you've heard in the last five years. "A New Beginning" does have a strong, catchy melody amid the typical hammer of Cazares fretwork. "Inane" sounds as if it's breaking off the "Edgecrusher".
I've officially exhausted the FEAR FACTORY references. Hopefully so has THREAT SIGNAL. Maybe their sophomore release will have more of its own identity...minus the barcode.
