It seems that despite all the rapid growth in the Finnish Metal scene we haven't seen anything significant happening lately on the Black Metal side of it. Sure there are many talented mixed-breed acts such as IMPALED NAZARENE, MOONSORROW, SOULGRIND and GAURITHOTH, but so far it seems like no one in the Finnish scene has stepped in to proudly hold the banner of Black Metal. Well, guess what? Things are about to change. Two and a half years after the release of their acclaimed 2003 album "Hypnotic", THYRANE is back with the kick-ass "Travesty Of Heavenly Essence", and are about to become a fierce competitor with the likes of NAGLFAR and LEGION.
Mastered by Mika Jussila (NORTHER, CHILDREN OF BODOM, IMPALED NAZARENE) at Finnvox Studios, it is quite obvious that with an opening track like "Parasites Of Submission", followed by the fast and furious "Decay Of The Christian Empire" (both double-kicking in at an unreal velocity), this band has a lot to offer. Despite very tight musicianship, don't expect any boring display of virtuosity here. THYRANE's compositions are extremely energetic, dark and sinister but also very straight-forward at the same time.
The title track, "Travesty Of Heavenly Essence", already sounds like a classic and "Nox Diaboli", despite a slower start, is an absolute killer. This disc shows no sign of slowing down - ultra-speed with an insatiable rhythmic section, which could easily make one wonder how THYRANE can keep it up during live performances. "Legacy If Saints Of Disguise" is more in the vein of OLD MAN'S CHILD or early DIMMU BORGIR and should please fans of sophisticated modern Black Metal. The ambiance remains totally uncompromising with the gruesome "Deteriorated" where some folk influences à la ENSIFERUM seem to appear here and there. This is probably the most technical song on the album. The SLAYER-inspired intro of the hyper-blasting "Truth Revealed" keeps this album right on track. It's hard to believe that this kind of music could ever sound so thick.
The pace of the album keeps getting faster with "Tolerance" and finally slows down a little bit with "Divinity Under Will". On this track, drummer Kristonic, proves to be one of the best out there without even trying. On "Prisoner Of Pain" the screams of vocalist Blasmor will haunt you forever. When the last track "Lost In Reflection" is about to end, you'll come to realize that this 44-minute album is way too short for something this good, and it will make you want to scream for more.
"Travesty Of Heavenly Essence" is Black Metal on steroids and I highly recommend it.
