Great Odin's ravens! If this isn't the ultimate gift to fans from a band I don't know what is! With "Wrath Of The Norsemen", both Metal Blade and, of course - the Spear-God's sons themselves - Sweden's AMON AMARTH (Johan Hegg - beard, vox, Olavi Mikkonen - guitars, Johan Söderberg - guitars, Ted Lundström - bass, and Fredrik Andersson - drums) have not only pulled out all of the proverbial stops, but frankly, smashed them to smithereens in full-on Thor's-hammer-like fashion in presenting one of the most beautifully excessive, over-the-top, all-inclusive Metal DVD packages since CA$HTALLICA's "Live: Binge & Purge" box set way back in '93. In this case, however, far from being any sort of blatant, shameless ca$h-in on a naïve, commercial fanbase, " Wrath Of The Norsemen" is rather a carefully crafted, and quite heroic visual treat for a strong and devoted group of pure, blue-steel-hearted Metal fans by a band with all the integrity in the world, and the resulting piece of work is truly nothing short of spectacular.
Comprising three discs and clocking in at well over seven hours in length, "Wrath Of The Norsmen" is not so much a "sneak peek" into the Norse-mythology-soaked world of AMON AMARTH as it is a full-on day camp. Here the Vikings offer us not one, but five complete European shows (mostly shot in Germany), including appearances at the 2005 Summer Breeze festival, Metal Blade's own Rrroooaaarrr fest of the same year, Wacken '04, and the "Fate Of Norns" release party at Rockfabrik also in '04. The true highlight of the collection however is a special, intended-for-DVD extended live performance captured in Cologne in '05 wherein the band play for close to two hours with a full stage show including mock Viking battles, lights and pyro, and 1000 slavering German fans screaming for more, more, MORE!!!
Also included is a good half an hour to 40 minutes of interview footage and backstage shenanigans also from the Cologne show, as well as discussions with the makers of this more than impressive DVD package. Not only do the members of AMON AMARTH come across as very likeable, down-to-earth guys, but also as devoted and quite serious musicians and artists with an undeniable love for their fanbase. The performance on offer during each of the five shows captured are of an unquestionably high caliber, the band giving nothing less than 100% both to themselves, and to their fans. Filmed/recorded with both Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 options, " Wrath Of the Norsmen" offers crystal clear quality sights and sounds and stands as a new benchmark for quality in the realm of Metal DVDs. Quite easily and unabashedly THE "must have" Metal DVD collection of the summer and the year. AMON AMARTH may rest easy now…for if this valiant effort does not earn them a seat in Valhalla's great hall, then I daresay nothing will. Raise the sails on your longship and get a copy today! Skaal!
