If there ever was a music DVD that sets the standard for all others to follow, it's this one. "Live Apocalypse" is the new and first-ever DVD from one of Sweden's (and Metal's) finest products, ARCH ENEMY. Released through Century Media, this two-disc set is jam-packed with over three hours of live concert footage, special features, videos, behind-the-scenes material, and the list goes on. With a track record like ARCH ENEMY's, it's safe to say that the quality contained herein speaks for itself.
The first DVD captures the titanic Swedish Metal machine performing a virtually flawless set in front of a sell-out crowd at the Forum in London, England on December 17, 2004. Right from the get-go, it's obvious that this is not your typical live DVD. There is absolutely no muffled sound, no piercing amp malfunctions, and you're not going be bored to tears watching one consistent shot of the band performing on stage. "Live Apocalypse" over-achieves on all fronts. This DVD is all about the experience; in this case, pulling you in and making you feel like you are you right there... in the audience. The filming techniques are just amazing. There must have been at least six of seven cameras shooting consistently as the band is filmed from all angles, which enhances the entire experience.
Production-wise, this is second to none. And the sound? Well, let's put it this way: the main concert was mixed by renowned producer Andy Sneap. That really says it all. Anything Sneap touches turns to gold and this is no exception to the rule. The great feature here is that the concert can be heard in Dolby Stereo, Dolby 5.1 Surround and DTS 5.1 Surround. Take your pick. Whatever your choice, you will witness ARCH ENEMY relentlessly pummeling the crowd with 18 tracks of pure Metal artillery, proving yet again that they are indeed one of the best live bands out there.
Words cannot rightfully describe the intensity unleashed by all the band members on stage. Angela Gossow is right up there with the best of the best growlers/screamers in the biz; Daniel Erlandsson is one of the most precise drummers around, and his drum solo is stunning; Sharlee D'angelo shows that he plays bass with more vitality than most; and the Amott brothers (Michael and Christopher) clearly state that they are the undisputed champs in Metal guitar-dom. That is probably one of the most memorable parts of the London gig - seeing Christopher performing. It has somewhat earned the right to be called "rare footage" considering the fact that he is no longer in the band. Nevertheless, the two Amotts deal a jaw-dropping dual-axe performance that closes with a killer live version of "Fields Of Desolation".
Disc one also contains three tracks performed live at Academy 2 in Manchester, England on December 13, 2005. Though this footage is not as captivating as the previous show (could have been the equipment who knows), the band (now joined by new axeman Fredrik Akesson) do unleash a signature performance. The accompanying disc contains a ton of extras and special features, including a UK tour documentary showing the band on the road with several other bands (HATE ETERNAL etc.), behind-the-scenes footage of the video shoot for "My Apocalypse", and in-depth interviews of band members talking about their gear (drums, guitar, etc.), giving insight into their individual worlds, as well as answering the question "What would you be doing if you weren't in ARCH ENEMY?". Disc two also contains all four videos for the tracks "Ravenous", "We Will Rise", "Nemesis" and "My Apocalypse", which is a real bonus since they were previously available in other media formats or on enhanced CDs only. Also included is "multi-angle songs", which enables you to view certain portions of the Forum show from several different angles focusing in on specific members.
As far as nominees for "DVD Of The Year" go, "Live Apocalypse" takes the cake. It is the culmination of ARCH ENEMY's undying hard work and truly is one of the best Metal DVDs ever produced. It has everything you could ask for - stellar production, killer sound, staggering live performances, lots of interesting features. When it comes to offering a complete package, it doesn't get much better than this. "Live Apocalypse" is an absolute necessity if you are an ARCH ENEMY fan. It's just that simple.
