Dismember - Under Blood Red Skies

It's hard to believe Swedish Death Metal legends DISMEMBER have been around this long. As one of the "Big Four" of the Swedish scene, DISMEMBER is the only band not to have broken up/reformed or undergone any extensive genre shift. The band hasn't seemed happier taking what AUTOPSY laid down and picking it up with a bit more melody. This concert and documentary DVD shows that with 20 years under their bullet belts, they aren't slowing down or selling out unless the party stops.

The live portion of the disc includes an impressive show from the 2008 Party San Festival. Armed with a batch of new songs, a few mid-era standouts and the entire "Like An Ever Flowing Stream" set list, DISMEMBER rips it up and tears it loose. With their trademark buzzing guitars and vocalist Matti Karki's bark in top form, any DISMEMBER fan that can't find pure enjoyment here has lost their mind. New songs like "Death Conquers All" and "Under A Bloodred Sky" show the band clearly has an impeccable knack at fusing AUTOPSY with IRON MAIDEN, while the "Like An Ever Flowing Stream" material comes across as ageless. On a rather odd note, it seems the band is having more fun on stage than the clips of the audience. And that could be explained by the duration of the festival and what comes across in the documentary.

"Death Metal & More Mental Illness" is the poor man's "History Of Iron Maiden" and a much more light-hearted version of MANOWAR's "Hell On Earth" series. The band glosses over their history yet tells everyone how to achieve that DISMEMBER guitar tone, and that they are still infatuated with AUTOPSY. What makes the documentary worthwhile is the bootlegged songs which aren't a part of the main feature's list and how much DISMEMBER has fun goofing off. There are a few songs that feature former drummer/founder Fred Estby before his departure (and the band still seems bummed out by his choice but doesn't take it out on their current drummer) and one clip of GRAVE's Ola Lindgren joining the band on stage and screwing it up. But most of what is featured is DISMEMBER chugging down endless beers and headbanging near European landmarks or roadside randomness. It's immature, but comical in its silliness.

Any DISMEMBER fan would be doing themselves a disservice not owning this. DISMEMBER may be the AC/DC of the Swedish Death Metal scene, but they deliver the goods and have been doing so for years. It's nice to see a band hard at work hell raising both on the stage and off. Recommended.
