Finally...the DVD release all MEGADETH fans have been waiting for. "Arsenal Of Megadeth" is the definitive two-disc set chronicling the band's illustrious career, which spans well over 20 years. Spread out over two discs with a combined running time of two and a half hours, the material contained herein is absolutely priceless. From the early days of MEGADETH's entrance into existence to the band's present chapter, and all tales in between, this DVD depicts some of the most informative and visually entertaining footage of all things MEGADETH. Ingredients include the band's music videos, previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage, unreleased live footage, interviews with band members and much more.
A glimpse of the inaugural years dominates the first portion of disc one with era 1986 and the classic "Peace Sells" video (the band's first-ever), followed by a vintage interview with the original band members (Dave Mustaine - guitar vocals, Dave Ellefson - bass, Chris Poland - guitar, Gar Samuelson - drums). After the video for "Wake Up Dead, 1988 is touched upon with some more interviews (including one with Jeff Young and Chuck Behler discussing how they came to join MEGADETH) and more videos, most notably "In My Darkest Hour". It's also pretty funny to see Mustaine talking about how he "tried to quit METALLICA a few times" before they "kicked him out" and that he felt he had" more talent".
The era covered most extensively is 1990, with the long-running lineup of Mustaine, Ellefson, Marty Friedman (guitar) and Nick Menza (drums). It begins with some behind-the-scenes/backstage footage at Wembley Stadium in England (featuring Mustaine with a full beard and mustache) then rolls right into a clip of the band performing live on the "Clash Of The Titans" 1990 tour. Of course, you cannot go without including the two hit "Rust In Piece" videos ("Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" and "Hangar 18"). There's a clip of MTV's Headbangers Ball "Mission MEGADETH" which shows Mustaine jumping out of an airplane then displaying some of his skydiving acrobatic skills. Along with more videos for tracks like "Symphony Of Destruction" and "Skin O' My Teeth", 1992 takes an in-depth look at how Mustaine kicked his drug addition and adopting a change in lifestyle, which included becoming a Christian and taking up martial arts.
Disc two begins with 1994, an era that saw a refined MEGADETH, with new music and a new attitude. A near 5-minute in-studio feature documenting the band recording "Youthanasia" tops off the selection, followed by some interviews with all band members talking about such topics as their "evolved" sound and the controversial album cover. Mustaine also describes the lyrical meaning behind "A Tout Le Monde" and "The Killing Road". There are also few live videos of the band performing "Reckoning Day" and "Symphony Of Destruction" on MTV in 1994/1995. One complaint here though: those added bleeps to edit out the word "bitch" on "Reckoning Day" is just plain annoying. Has censorship gotten that sticky? The "Cryptic Writings" era (1997) is documented with "Trust", "Almost Honest" and "A Secret Place", and then drifting by rather quickly (and most appropriately) is 1999. "Risk" was clearly the band's worst album to date so it's really no loss that that timeline is showcased briefly. This left more room for the 2005 chapter of MEGADETH with two live performances of "Sweating Bullets" and "Peace Sells", which featured newest members Glen Drover (guitar), Shawn Drover (drums) and James MacDonough (now ex-bassist).
It goes without saying that MEGADETH are one of the most celebrated Metal bands in the genre's history, and what better way to capture the essence of their existence than on this two-disc DVD pack, which undoubtedly contains the most extensive MEGADETH material you'll probably ever find. A visual anthology of epic proportions, "Arsenal Of Megadeth" is an absolute necessity for those who love this band, both members of the old school and the new school.
