Together as a vicious force in the death metal arena since 1990, Brazil's KRISIUN have released album after album of extreme in-your-face, no-holds-barred auditory havoc. With the release of their latest offering, "Bloodshed", KRISIUN have changed things up a bit with a few mid-paced songs. Don't worry, the songs still rip and they've got the trademark KRISIUN sound! I had opportunity to ask drummer Max Kolesne a handful of questions regarding the "Bloodshed" CD, touring plans, the possibility of a live release, and a few others. Enjoy...
Are there any immediate plans for the New Year regarding touring in support of "Bloodshed"?
In March we will start touring in South and Central America. It's going to be really crazy, because we will be playing in some countries for the first time. We are already booked to play some summer festivals in Europe, and there are still more shows and tours to be confirmed.
KRISIUN didn't appear on North American shores in 2004. Will we be seeing you over here anytime soon?
Sure you will. We can't wait to come back to the U.S. to play some killer shows and see our friends. I still don't know exactly when we will do it, but I'm sure it's going to be soon.
"Voodoo" from "Bloodshed" is something a little different for KRISIUN. Can you tell us a little bit behind this slow instrumental track?
Yeah, "Voodoo" is kind of a tribal thing, inspired by the ancient tribes rituals. It's not a regular song; it's more like an intro we played ourselves with drums, guitars and bass.
Compared to past KRISIUN efforts, there are a few slower songs on "Bloodshed". Was this something the band set out to do, or was it just something that came naturally during the writing process?
"Bloodshed" IS really fast; it just has more rhythm variety, and not so many blast beats. The writing process is really natural for us. Usually we just get together and start jamming. From the riffs Moyses spits from his machine-gun guitar, we start working on the songs together. Definitely, the most important thing to us is to play something that sounds killer; it can be an ultra fast tune, or something heavier and groovier.
I was lucky enough to see KRISIUN at the Milwaukee Metalfest a few years back and was amazed at the intensity of the live show. Are there any plans to record a live album to try to reproduce this intensity level for the fans unable to catch you in the live environment?
Sure, we will release a live album sometime - we just don't know exactly when its going be. But it definitely won’t be too long.
As I previously mentioned, the KRISIUN live show is very energetic. As it seems almost every band seems to find it necessary to release a DVD lately, are there any plans for a KRISUN DVD to surface in the future?
Oh yeah! Our DVD is going to be out really soon - Metal Mind from Poland will release it. There's going to be two main shows on the DVD, with really good quality and many more shots from us touring and recording "Works Of Carnage".
To me, KRISIUN has always been a close-knit, musically-sound, extreme machine. No offence to Moyses, but has there ever been discussion of bringing on a second guitarist to further push the level of extremity?
Dude, we will never have a second guitarist, because Moyses' playing is unique, and besides that Alex's bass sound - it's a fuckin' wall in our live shows. We don't need one more guitar.
You've been teamed up to tour with other outstanding bands over the years including INCANTATION, MORBID ANGEL, VADER, CRYPTOPSY etc. Are there any specific bands you would like to tour with in the future?
MOTÖRHEAD and SLAYER!
I believe I read that Alex filled in on vocals for ANGELCORPSE when their vocalist quit during a tour. How was he received by the ANGELCORPSE fans? Were there any rabid fans that were unappreciative of Alex's singing efforts?
Actually for some fans it was like a dream to see Alex singing for ANGELCORPSE. And I guess everybody else understood the situation and appreciated what Alex did for ANGELCORPSE. That tour was a hell of a tour. Crazy shit!
So much has been said of the European metal fans and support. Personally, I haven't experienced it (yet). Is there really that big of a difference between the American and European fanbase?
It all depends on the city's metal scene. Some of the shows we have done in the U.S. are just some of the craziest we have ever done and some were not so good - just like in Europe. Some places are killer, and some are not. We love to play both in Europe and the U.S.
The recent passing of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was such an absurd situation to the entire metal community. Has KRISIUN ever crossed paths with any "crazed" fans over the years?
We are still very sad about the death of Dimebag. He was definitely a guitar hero - a master in the art of playing guitar. Unfortunately we never had the chance to meet those guys.
Is there anything else you'd like to mention to our readers regarding the band or "Bloodshed"?
I just would like to say thanks to everybody who has supported us, and that we will come back to the U.S. soon for some long touring. We'll be back!!!!!!
On behalf of the staff at METALEATER.COM, I would like to extend thanks for taking the time to update our readers and your fans on current KRISIUN events, as well as wishing you the best for the "Bloodshed" release.
Thanks man! We really appreciate it! Metal never dies! [FIN]
