As MOTÖRHEAD continue their trek across Canada, nothing is being left behind except multitudes of ringing ears. Damn, this band is loud! MOTÖRHEAD took a chance and played a much smaller venue than they're used to playing in Thunder Bay last Saturday evening (April 23). Old fans, new fans, and those only familiar with the legendary name filled the club to see MOTÖRHEAD do what they've been doing for 30 years now...playing good old rock n' roll, the MOTÖRHEAD way.
I missed openers DAMN 13 but saw Montreal's PRIESTESS (Where were 3 INCHES OF BLOOD?). PRIESTESS played a mixture of stoner-rock and blues-based hard rock which reminded me of FU-MANCHU meets THE FOUR HORSEMEN. After a few songs, people were really cheering for them and I feel they won some new fans from the MOTÖRHEAD-anxious crowd.
The average age in the club was at least 30. I saw many old faces, people who normally aren't at the metal shows anymore, but were sure to come out and see England's finest metal band in person, or at least to say they were at Thunder Bay's biggest metal event to date...and what an event it was! When the lights went down and founder/bassist/vocalist Lemmy Kilmister, guitarist Phil Campbell (21 years of service), and drummer Mikkey Dee (13 years of service) walked onto the stage, the crowd went nuts! This town and these people were hungry for a good show and MOTÖRHEAD were expected to feed that hunger. After opening with "Dr. Rock", it was apparent by the cheers and screams from the crowd that MOTÖRHEAD was going to satisfy.

It was easy to determine how long this crew has been playing together - so tight, so timely, so entertaining. The band played songs spanning their entire career including "Stay Clean", "No Class", "Dancing On Your Grave", "Killed By Death", and new songs from last year's INFERNO like "Killers and "In The Name Of Tragedy".
Mikkey Dee gave the other guys a break with a very energetic drum solo in the middle of "Sacrifice". I feel I have to say that when drummers are discussed, Mikkey is often overlooked. His time with KING DIAMOND through the mid-late eighties and his time with MOTÖRHEAD since has allowed him to further perfect his skills behind the skins.
MOTÖRHEAD performed the Mikkey Dee acoustic guitar-accompanied "Whorehouse Blues", "Ace Of Spades", and an extended version of "Overkill" as an encore to close out the evening - all while the crowd continued to roar in appreciation. A great band that presents an equally great live performance. That's MOTÖRHEAD! Be sure to see MOTÖRHEAD on this anniversary tour as they're mixing songs up a bit, and some may not be heard live again!
