MEGADETH Mainman Checks In From Ireland
- January 31, 2005

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted this message on the band's official website:

"Droogies!

Well, we made it here without a hitch and Shawn got delayed for hours becuase he shot his mouth off about how he had a direct flight and we all had to connect. That'll learn ya!

So, John, Lance, and I went for a walk early Sunday morning in the Irish mist, and naturally I now have a cold; I am over my jet lag, but my nose it bleeding and I feel sick. Don't worry though . . . most bugs that enter my body die!

I am in an internet cafe down the street from the hotel we are staying at and the crew is loading in for one night of pre-production before the tour starts. I would love to invite everyone down to witness the work before the concert but I know that it is not a good idea, cuz I will just yak all night and not do anything.

I had a real good chat last night with my Drover boys and as so grateful for the attitude and professionalism. They stated a bunch of things that they would like to see and do to make things even better, and jeez, what a great feeling to have people putting in for a change instead of taking out.

I talked with Michael Sarna before we left about the video and begged him to do something about the mismatched hair color, but he assured me I am overreacting. I hope he's right. Maybe we can put up a still and you can tell us what you think.

Now, two "Full-On" Irish Breakfasts later I think I have already put back on all the body fat I lost over the break, so I am going to cool it with the grub for now so I don't look like 'you know who.'

I would like to thank the guys at Rockmace for taking such good care of James over the years, and congradulations to your future. The decision to play ESP was James' and I am very happy that he believes in ESP as much as Glen and I do. In fact, I would be really pumped to see some photos of everyone who owns a DV8, DV8R, DV200, or an AXXION. Maybe I can convince our beloved webmaster to create a Signature Guitar Club page.

My apologies for taking so long to sign all of the photos that go out in the fan club packages. I have been up to my eyeballs in getting sued, moving, going to NAMM, transporting my horses to Cali, and preparing for this trip, not to mention putting the final touches on the DVD of all the videos and great film stuff, as well as starting the preliminary talks of the Official Gratest hits record (which I would like your help in choosing).

We are going to start putting the pieces together for my next record, whatever/whenever that will be on this tour, so press yer ear to the doors and walls. You may just hear the next BTU or KTK at a sound check.

Lastly, when I recommend something for someone, it is not for everyone. Please don't think that your amazing uniqueness is taken for granted by me. If we meet and I get to know you, and you ask me for some advice, there is no telling what I am going to tell you to do, think, act, or read. I love each one of you for who you are, and would never treat you as though you were all the same, although I do treat you all as equals and have the same affection and gratitude for your contiued support.

This will be a great time in my life to spend with my band and you. Let's make the best of it. And the answer to where I am taking the boys was St. Andrews. I will not be looking for Tiger's balls however.

Let's go already!!!"

NILE PrepareTo Crush
- January 29, 2005

NILE guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders has posted this update on the band's official website:

"We finished the guitar, bass vocal and additional instrument tracking at the soundlab in Columbia, SC with Neil Kernon and Bob Moore. It was an utterly grueling session, with every single day of those 2 1/2 weeks being a 14-16 hour working frenzy. The next phase will be to start mixing on Friday at Rax Trax in Chicago. We have 10 days scheduled there with Neil Kernon mixing/producing.

Based on what we have heard from the recordings so far, this is easily our strongest work yet. There are 10 songs as well as 2 reasonably short intro/instrumentals, with total album time weighing in at a pre-mix length of 65 minutes.

We are seriously intense about these new songs, and can't wait for people to hear them.

Be prepared to be crushed."

Metal Musicians Comment On Violence In Metal
- January 26, 2005

Imhotep Zine from Norway have issued an extensive report asking a long list of hard rock/metal musicians these two questions: "Can aggressive music led people to kill others?" and "Is there any connection between heavy music and violence / killings / crimes against humanity?". Here are some of the reponses:

Jens Johansson (STRATOVARIUS):

"I think the connection is not a useful one to make. This was just one of those freak things that no amount of planning, forethought or "self policing by the industry" could have prevented. I would blame it more on the state of health care (psychiatric health care in particular) in the USA and of course on the gun control laws! But I would not put much blame on those things. It's simply not useful. I also wonder a bit why the US Marine Corps take a schizophrenic guy and teach him how to use a gun. But maybe they need people like that, what the fuck do I know. Such a sad thing what happened. I only met Dimebag very briefly once when we played this Randy Rhoads benefit together in LA many years ago. He seemed a cool guy, surprisingly quiet for playing such aggressive music. :) Everyone I've spoken to who knew him say that he was one of the sweetest people they met. It's so typical somehow. Why don't they ever kill the assholes??? :)"

Jonas Björler (THE HAUNTED, ex-AT THE GATES):

"No, I don't think brutal music causes violent behavior. The violence I've seen in pits during metal concerts have been all about 'friendly violent fun'", like EXODUS said. I really don't see a clear-cut connection. But there will always be exceptions to a certain rule, and in the case of Dimebag's killer - that was a really sick & troubled young man who dealt with his frustration & anguish the wrong way."

Gene Hoglan (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DEATH, OLD MAN'S CHILD, TESTAMENT):

"These people are VERY misinformed, and, by the looks of their articles, really have it in for heavy metal and anyone who listens to it or plays it. How could anyone seriously lay the blame back on Dime for some psychopath's delusional breakdown? No one came out to blame John Lennon for Mark David Chapman's murder of him, and he was under FBI scrutiny for years! Had he been in a metal band (or merely an avid fan), it would have been, "Oh, he got what was coming to him", and his death could have possibly been made fodder for some of the true haters out there.

Music only becomes an issue when it can be used to enflame a story. When Charles Whitman climbed to that bell tower in Texas and gunned-down dozens of people, no one questioned his musical tastes. Chances are, him being from Texas, the 1960's, ex-military, he was into country/western music. Did that drive him to kill a ton of people, with its discussions of how "I'm gonna take a gun and shoot my wife", or "I shot a man in Reno/ just to watch him die"? Sure it did. Is this this uninformed conjecture on my part? Of course it is. But it sure is easy to do...

Now, some factions of Black Metal seemed to embrace violence against others...that's a subject I don't know what to do about... RIP Dime. You are loved and missed..."

OVERKILL - "RelixIV" Being Released In March
- January 25, 2005

It's been a long road for OVERKILL. With 2005 marking the 20 year anniversary of their first record deal signing, and 14 full length studio albums under their belt, they have seen and done it all and are still creating high quality thrash metal music.

When you think of the New York/New Jersey thrash/metal scene of the 80's and 90's you think of bands like ANTHRAX, BIOHAZARD, CARNIVORE and NUCLEAR ASSAULT. These bands were known for being down to earth. The kind of people you would expect to meet on the street or at a bar. OVERKILL are no exception. These New Jersey natives have always been the definition of "blue-collar" thrash metal, and they continue to present high-quality, no-frills, solid working-class thrash on their latest album "RelixIV". "We're the real deal, and always have been. We feel that we have a common ground with our fans and we understand where they are coming from and in turn they understand us", says vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth.

"RelixIV" is entirely self-produced by the band. "We’ve been putting out records for a while now and we've been paying attention. By now, we know how to do it ourselves," says Blitz. "We wanted a dirty sound. We don't want something that is over-produced. I think that in 2005, less can be more, it's performance vs. process." Indeed, OVERKILL are masterful when it comes to bringing their live ferocity to the recording studio. "We just push the record button and it all comes out. We try to bring the same attitude to the record as we do on stage."

The core creative team of Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni has kept OVERKILL rolling fast and hard for over 20 years. "D.D. builds the house and I put the roof on", says Blitz. "When you listen to an OVERKILL record, you can recognize the band before I even open my mouth. I just put the icing on the cake."

In regard to the metal scene and image today, Blitz says "I've always thought the devil is more dangerous when you can't recognize him. Metal is extreme, the more the better, but you have to do it tastefully." OVERKILL live up to their own standards, rather than mimicking and following in others' footsteps: "We are a listening band. We are always aware of what else is going on in the music world, and I'm sure it influences us, but we have to make ourselves happy, and do what we think is best. Change in music is a good thing and this record is about where we're headed and where we've been. It's introspective and personal. I'm not trying to make a big political statement, just saying what I feel."

With the closing track "Old School", OVERKILL's ode to their early days in the business, it becomes clear that this band have paid their dues and still know how to enjoy themselves. Blitz says, "We actually got (hard rock radio personality) Eddie Trunk and George Parente, who used to manage us and ran L'amours (the infamous club in Brooklyn that helped put OVERKILL on the map) to appear on that song. It's about where we started. It takes us back to our punk rock days. I remember pogo-ing to the RAMONES before I was stage diving with SLAYER." This nod to their past has always been a part of OVERKILL: building something new, while never abandoning what they already have built. "We have made an unwitting, unknowing progression without forgetting our roots."

Here is the complete track listing for "RelixIV":

01. Within Your Eyes
02. Love
03. Loaded Rack
04. Bats In The Belfry
05. A Pound Of Flesh
06. Keeper
07. Wheelz
08. The Mark
09. Play The Ace
10. Old School

"RelixIV" will be released on March 22 through Spitfire Records.

BLIND GUARDIAN Vocalist Offers Update
- January 25, 2005

BLIND GUARDIAN vocalist Hansi Kürsch has posted this message at the band's official website:

"A Happy New Year to everyone! Though you have not heard a lot from us during the last months we have not been lazy at all. There are a lot of things going on at the moment. Just to mention a few: the DEMONS AND WIZARDS production is making good progress and the same can be said about the songwriting for the next BLIND GUARDIAN album which is at a very important point.

André and I have completed 5 songs for the new album and 10 songs for the orchestral project. Yesterday, we had a meeting with Charlie Bauerfeind (who is going to produce both albums) during which we have set up a rough schedule for the next months. We definitely will start the production within the year and it won't take as much time to accomplish it as it did with "A Night at The Opera".

With regards to the next DEMONS AND WIZARDS album I am happy to tell you that 5 songs have been mixed for it already and that there are 7 more to go. How many of them we are going to use for the regular album and how many we will use as bonus material I can't tell you right now. There are 11 Schaffer/Kürsch songs and one cover tune. We will be done with everything mid February. The album surely will be released in late spring, or early summer. I am very pleased with the songs and so is Jon. My favourite tune at the moment is called "Touched By The Crimson King". We have not spoken about an album title yet but have to make a decision rather soon. I will let you know."

CRYSTAL EYES - New Album Completed
- January 20, 2005

Swedish power metallers CRYSTAL EYES have posted this message on their official website:

"It took about four weeks longer than planned, but finally the album is finished. It was mastered last Wednesday by Dragan Tanaskovic at BOHUS MASTERING, who also have mastered the latest stuff from EVERGREY, and damn he's good. If you got the time and tools to produce a really satisfying album it's definitely worth four more weeks of hard work.

Earlier we've always put whole songs on the website, but during December the traffic on the website increased so much we blew our download barrier. So we're now forced to use only three minute samples. Anyway, you can now listen to a sample of the title song of the new album "Confessions Of The Maker" (here). A heavy mid-tempo song seasoned with lots of '80s BLACK SABBATH. Closer to the release we'll probably put up a little faster one."

MERCENARY - New Song Posted Online
- January 20, 2005

In 2004, Denmark's MERCENARY unleashed their Century Media debut, "11 Dreams", to electric fanfare across Europe. Just in time for the Feb. 8 North American release date, Century Media has posted a second MP3 from the album, entitled "Firesoul". Check it out here (Real Media).

The band has also put together 2004 tour footage recorded on their personal cellphones and turned it into a video for "World Hate Center". The video includes surprise appearances from the bands they toured with last year including Michael Hakansson from Sweden's EVERGREY. Check it out here (Windows Media).

The North American release of "11 Dreams" will include two bonus tracks, one of which is the 3D remix of title track, "11 Dreams". Vocalist/guitarist Kral talks about his introduction to 3D technology: "In 1998, our former guitarist Nikolai Brinkmann (RIP) got a mind blowing demo CD of Binaural sound (3D sound) from the university. The CD had on it an interrogation where this policeman is questioning you about a murder. I first listened to it over headphones with my eyes closed (this enhances the effect), and I felt like I was right there in the room myself. It gave me goose bumps. I immediately thought, "What if this was used in music?" From that day this was my mission, and on/off for the next 3 years I spoke to different people from the university about using this technology to render a MERCENARY track. The guys I spoke with were very interested, as it helped to further their technology and also to get it more exposure. It took so long to arrange because one, the technology was not quite ready for a 50-track recording in 2001 and two, I still needed the right MERCENARY track for this experiment. At the end of 2003 when mixing the "11 Dreams" album, I really thought the time was right and we had a very qualified track. I contacted am3d again and they were ready as well. Jacob Hansen, the album's producer, had all our recorded tracks on hard disk, so he burned it to DVD and sent it to Michael Holmberg, the guy that did the rendering. We spent 5-6 days perfecting this one song and at the same time we made sure that the 3D presentation was effective. For our 3D version of "11 Dreams" all 50 tracks (drums, guitar, bass, keys and vocals) were rendered providing a full-sensory effect."

Kral goes on to say, "Currently, the effect cannot be reproduced normally (through speakers), and you have to listen with headphones. Additionally, remember that the 3D effect will be better with higher quality headphones. It gives you the feeling that you are surrounded by "11 Dreams", like you are right there in the middle of the song, or in the middle of our rehearsal room. It's like Mike, the drummer, is right behind you drumming. When the vocals come in you feel like Mikkel is singing one meter to your left, and I am singing one meter to the right. You are also able to separate the vocals, which is nearly impossible in a normal stereo mix. When Martin cranks up the guitar solo, you’ll really be in for 3D: it almost makes you dizzy. The guitar solo feels like it is going out of the headphones, similar to the movies where the images seem to go further out than the screen's borders. The solo circulates 360 degrees around your head; it's the coolest effect ever (more detailed info on the 3D technology can be found here). We are very proud to be pioneering this technology, making a full-blown 50-track 3D rendition of our song. It is truly a totally new experience, and not the last time we will be doing this. So put on those headphones, close your eyes, strap yourself in, and get ready for a new ride: free your ears!!!"

MERCENARY will be touring Europe with BRAINSTORM and AT VANCE in late April and early May 2005. The band will also play this summer at Germany's Wacken Open Air Festival, and Turkey's Rock Station Festival.

VADER Heading Back To The Studio In July
- January 20, 2005

Polish death metal kings VADER have posted this update on their official website:

"It's not a joke, the band is going to enter Hertz Studio, Bialystok at the beginning of July to record a brand new MCD under a working title "The Art Of War". It's worth to add here, Wieslawscy brothers will take care not only of the recordings but also will produce it! The MCD will contain only new songs! Follow with Peter's opinion, the release will feature 3 extremely intense and fast cuts and one song in a vein of band's typical style. "The Art Of War" will also contain a special bonus videoclip for the title track. It's going to be something really new, unconventional and powerful, expect the unexpectable (the production itself has taken almost 5 months)! This time a different person will take care of layout and MCD's artwork. Stay tuned for more details.

As you maybe know, the old deal with Metal Blade Records has been recently fulfilled, so the band is currently looking for a new contract and negotiating with some partners. For the moment nobody actually knows who will sign Panzer Division VADER for this and future releases. But don't be afraid, there's a few serious offers from well known and established labels, just be patient and cross your fingers for us! More details will follow soon."

DESTINY Complete "Beyond All Sense 2005"
- January 19, 2005

Sweden's DESTINY have posted this message on their official website:

"It took a long time but "Beyond All Sense 2005" is finally completed.

This is not the new DESTINY album or even the follow up to Future Of The Past released in 2004. This is a rerecorded version of DESTONY's very first album Beyond All Sense, released twenty years ago in March 1985. The original album was just released in Sweden in limited number of 2000 copies and only on vinyl.

The oldest piece of music, "Ode To You", is from 1983. However the lyrics for the same song are brand new, written by Kristoffer in December 2004 as a tribute to the late Dimbage Darrel. This song was never released on any album and is the first bonus track on this album. The Second bonus track, "No Way Out", is a song originally intended to be included on the debut album but was left out because of the time limit on vinyls. Once again Kristoffer wrote brand new lyrics for an older piece of music. This time it's about OZZY OSBOURNE and his reality show.

This is the members of "Destiny 2004" interoperation of more than twenty year old songs by the members of "Destiny 1984". Hopefully you will enjoy the album for what it is even though the style of the album is quite different from the music that DESTINY represents in 2005.

The final track listing of the album is as follows:

01. Sacrilege
02. Kill The Witch
03. Ode To You
04. Spellbreaker
05. Power By Birth
06. Rest In Peace
07. Madame Guillotine (Hang Them High)
08. No Way Out
09. More Evil Than Evil
10. Sirens In The Dark

DESTINY 2005:

Kristoffer Göbel: Vocals
Stefan Björnshög: Bass
Janne Ekberg: Guitars
Birger Löfman: Drums

Guest Musicians:

Fredrik Olsson of LOST HORIZON fame: Lead guitar* and 12-string acoustic guitars** Mathias Rosén: Keyboards on "Power By Birth"

The album was recorded at DRS, Gothenburg, Sweden and StudiOmega, Varberg, Sweden. Mixed by Christian Silver at Studiomega, Varberg, Sweden and mastered by: Dragan Tanaskovic at Bohus Sound Recording."

DARKANE Gutarist Provides New Album Update
- January 19, 2005

DARKANE guitarist Christofer Malmström has provided this update on his official website regarding the new DARKANE album:

"Ok, we are still recording the DARKANE album. Right now we have vocals to 5 songs, and 5 more songs to go. I've recorded a few of my solos too. I'm very eager to get this album ready because it's taken a lot of time. We started in october and it's taking so long because we are working our day jobs at the same time, and you can't be in the studio every day either. Got to take care of personal stuff too. Some days we enter the studio just to fix something that might have gone broken or just make backup copies of the hard drive, and such things takes a lot of time too. Anyway, the end result will be good I'm quite convinced. If you like our former albums you will probably like this too. On "Expanding Senses" there were a lot of "one-note-vocal lines", and we have tried to avoid that this time by writing "more-than-one-note-vocal lines"! Get it? =) Anyway, today I think some new photos from the studio turned up at www.darkane.com.

Today was a day off from the studio for me so I thought I would check in and at least give you something. And when I give something it´s mostly video clips because I am the guy in the band that always runs the video camera when things are happening. I've taped a lot of all of our recordings and tours and someday parts of it will end up on a DVD. That´s been the plan for a long time.

This time however I won't put up anything that I've shot myself, but a small TV clip from December 2003 when DARKANE was on the national television program "Musikbyrån". The show was about the Sweden Rock festival earlier that year and we had the opportunity to be a part of it. It starts with an interview in Swedish with Mr. Wildoer, and after that is a small segment from "Violence From Within" played live. Shots from that festival also ended up on the "Chaos vs Order" video.

The clip is 1.35 min long and 4.7 MB large. Download it by clicking here! (Windows Media)

Til next time take care and stay metal!"

DEMONS & WIZARDS - Drum Tracks Completed
- January 19, 2005

Drummer Bobby Jarzombek (ICED EARTH, HALFORD) has posted this message on his official website:

"Hey all,

We're already two weeks into the New Year - high time to fill you in on what's been cooking and what's in store for the immediate future.

Last month I flew out to Tampa, Florida to record my drum tracks for the new DEMONS & WIZARDS CD. This was my first time recording at the famous Morrisound Studios and it was great working with Jim Morris. He's an excellent engineer/producer and gets some KILLER drum tones. Jon (Schaffer) and Hansi (Kuersch) wrote some real cool songs for this one. No release date as of yet though. Another album I recorded drums for a while back, Rob Rock's AFM debut "Holy Hell", should be out in April. My HALFORD band mate Roy Z co-wrote the tunes, produced and plays guitar on it so you know it's gonna rock!

Speaking of recordings, I recently did an interview with the 'Brazil Under Ice' ICED EARTH fansite where I commented on several of my favorite CDs that I played on. Here's the link.

For those of you that don't know, I released my drum video "Performance & Technique" on VHS a year and a half ago. Well, after a year of shooting new footage, editing, authoring, contract negotiations, etc. - it's finally done: My instructional drum DVD "Performance & Technique" has just been released by Warner Bros. Publications and will be making its debut appearance at the NAMM show this week in Anaheim, California from (Thur.) Jan. 20th - (Sun.) 23rd. "P&T" will be getting heavy rotation on the TVs in the Warner Bros. Publications booth (#3500) - so stop by and check it out.

The DVD version of "Performance & Technique" contains footage not included in the original VHS version including 4 bonus segments and PDF transcriptions for DVD-ROM. I will update my website in a couple of weeks with complete descriptions of the new segments and a link to order the "Performance & Technique" DVD.

Last but not least, I will also be making a couple of personal appearances at the NAMM show. I'll be at the Vic Firth Sticks booth (along with a few other drummers) at 3:00pm on Saturday doing a signing session and I'm also performing a drum solo at the Pearl Drums booth at 10:00 on Sunday morning. See you there!"

NEVERMORE Heading To The Studio In February
- January 18, 2005

Seattle-based quintet NEVERMORE are currently wrapping up the songwriting process for their highly anticipated new album, set for a summer release. In February, the band will head to Backstage Studios in England to begin recording with legendary producer Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, OPETH). This will mark the band's first recording with guitarist Steve Smyth (ex-TESTAMENT). The band will proceed to debut some new material on a short European tour in March.

In other news, due to overwhelming demand, the band's critically acclaimed 2003 album, "Enemies Of Reality", is currently being remixed by Sneap and will be repackaged with altered cover artwork, two promotional video clips (the title track and "I, Voyager") and a live video of the title track performed at Germany's Wacken Open Air festival this past summer.

The remixed "Enemies Of Reality" will replace the existing version of the album in stores beginning in March. Fans who have already purchased the record and want to hear the new edition can special order it from the CenturyMedia.com web shop, where the CD itself will be sold individually (i.e., without jewel case and artwork) for $5, including shipping. The disc will be mailed in a CD sleeve; a link to a special website containing the downloadable revised artwork will be included in order confirmation e-mails.

Warrel Dane (vocals) further describes his excitement over the album being remastered, "We're glad that we can all finally hear "Enemies Of Reality" the way it should have sounded in the first place. Andy's mixes sound brutal, and the infamous blanket of mud is gone. We're hard at work getting ready for the studio. The new material is shaping up to be some of our best work yet. We're psyched to get in the studio with Andy and tear it up again."

FRAGMENTS OF UNBECOMING Begin Vocalist Search
- January 18, 2005

German metallers FRAGMENTS OF UNBECOMING have begun their search for a new vocalist. Here is the statement from their official website:

"Sam Anetzberger, our momentary main vocalist, who at first entered the band to become the exclusive frontman/main shouter (besides Stefan, as everyone knows) we never had before and could work with especially on stage, won't be able to become an exclusive longtime frontman for FRAGMENTS OF UNBECOMING due to his studies and being permanent member in his main band LEGACY. We already foresaw that we will have to take a final decision one day. Looking forward to the upcoming recordings, we definitely need someone working exclusively with us. That is to say, we now need a powerful frontman and we are excited to have someone entirely new in the band. The one to be chosen should be committed to shows, practices, forthcoming recordings and must have great stage presence (in any possible personal or special way). On principle, there is no matter to sound the same way Sam does, doubtless the one should be an extreme vocalist who perfectly fits to our music.

If YOU are interested, please get in touch as soon as possible via mail: info@fragmentsofunbecoming.com.

UNEARTH Singer Saves KILLSWITCH ENGAGE
- January 15, 2005

At the Arrow Hall Mississauga, Ontario on January 9 of the SLIPKNOT Canadian tour, bill-mates UNEARTH lent KILLSWITCH ENGAGE a helping voice. When KILLSWITCH ENGAGE powerhouse vocalist Howard Jones came down with a bad case of laryngitis, doctors were called in to check out Howard's vocal chords and up until the last possible moment the band was not sure if they were going to be able to perform due to Howard's medical condition. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE asked UNEARTH vocalist Trevor Phipps to join them on stage to perform vocals for the set. Trevor did (in his own style) pull it off really well and the fans were not disappointed at all. 8000 fans sang along every word of the set making the band very proud!

KILLSWITCH axeman Adam D commented, "We were in a serious pinch and the UNEARTH guys really pulled through for us. They are great guys and great friends we really appreciate what they did for us."

UNEARTH vocalist Trevor Phipps added, "Friends help each other out and I didn't want to see KILLSWITCH have to cancel and let down their fans. I was glad to help out and I did my best for them and their fans in a very last minute decision. I personally want to thank the crowd for all their help screaming along with every word."

KATAKLYSM - New Album Title Revealed
- January 15, 2005

KATAKLYSM singer Maurizio Iacono has issued this band update:

"Hi everyone... just an update on things here, we've been working non stop on our new album since last fall, on tour and in between touring, I've been receiving mp3 files from the rehearsals here in Chicago from J-f and things are going right on point.

I'll be going to Montreal in March after the DANZIG tour to work on the record with the guys and work the arrangements.

The transition from Martin to Max has been very smooth and what Max is putting in the new songs is just phenomenal and nothing to take away from Martin but it just sounds more like us now less mechanical and more human and that is what KATAKLYSM is about. It's all about good songs, well arranged and well done without deviating from who you are.. not about being the heaviest and fastest in the world... its also about doing tracks that will make the test of time and that is what we are set out to do, we will keep working hard on this album to give you the best we have to offer, on that note we have set the title, In The Arms Of Devastation, for the next album.

Nuclear Blast have set a tentative October 17th release date but you might have to wait til early 2006, because until we have chills listening to the new material.. it ain't coming out!

See you on the DANZIG tour!

Maurizio."

The album debuted at #20 on the Billboard charts and has garnered accolades in such mainstream publications as Billboard, Blender and Stuff, among others. SHADOWS FALL were also recently hailed as a "Band To Watch In 2005" by Spin magazine.

Fair further comments on the upcoming tour "We're totally excited about our next U.S. tour where we once again will be playing with bands that we are not only friends with but also fans of. We've been friends with the guys in SLIPKNOT for a while but have not had the chance to actually tour with them. We look forward to this opportunity. There should be lots of crazy tour stories to add to our growing list."

SHADOWS FALL will also embark on tours of Australia, Japan and Korea beginning Feb. 7.

STRATOVARIUS Get Back To Business!
- January 13, 2005

Well, it would seem that certain 2005 "predictions" circulating around METALEATER.COM have come to pass earlier than expected. After non-stop turbulence in 2004, STRATOVARIUS are finally getting back to business as usual - as it should be! Here is the official statement from the band's website:

"After all the turmoil of 2004, we are happy to announce that STRATOVARIUS has reunited with the classic line-up: Timo Tolkki, Timo Kotipelto, Jörg Michael, Jari Kainulainen and Jens Johansson.

Since his breakdown in April (2004), we have patiently been waiting for Timo Tolkki's health to improve. It has been, and since about 6 weeks he has been strong enough to go back to work.

Also during the past months, after much talk, soul-searching and reflection most of the damage within the band has been repaired. The rest of us now understand Timo's condition, and have slowly come to terms with it. There has been forgiveness, and everyone has a good relationship again.

Many of the immense problems we were facing have now found concrete solutions.

Lastly, we can announce that work is already in progress on completely new material."

BEHEMOTH Heading To North America, U.K.
- January 10, 2005

BEHEMOTH have just returned from their first ever South American tour and within a few days new tours start, in UK and North America. It seems that with "Demigod" Nergal, Inferno, Orion, Seth and their soundman Malta are unstoppable.

Mainman Nergal says "To be honest, we didn't feel that much energy for a long time. Maybe it's the new line up, maybe a new, killer album, maybe new contracts...maybe part of each. But the shows we deliver these days are one of the best we played ever and that is the fact! We feel like we got something to say with "Demigod" and we will push hard and will not give up! I don't wanna say that this album is our "be or not to be" but yes, it's opening new doors and I'd like to believe it's some kind of pay off to all the hard work and dedication. One thing is obvious, there is so much confidence in the band nowadays and we are on the right track to prove it!"

He also goes on to say ""We are not gonna stop. On the 13th we are kicking off in Brighton and do the first headlining tour in Great Britain. I know it's very difficult market but "Demigod" have a great press there and I really wanna give it a try. Right after the show we play in London we get ourselves on the plane to Atlanta to join SUFFOCATION and do one month long tour in US. I can't wait doin it. We will be there right on time as "Demigod" has its street date on the January 25th. It's gonna be amazing...new songs, new line up...it all works sooo perfect these days...I wanna show it to the American audience."

INTO ETERNITY Announce New Vocalist
- January 9, 2005

INTO ETERNITY have announced that OMEGA CROM vocalist, Stuie B, is now officially the new singer for the band. INTO ETERNITY have posted this message on their official website:

"Hello Everyone!

Ok..... We have spent a week jamming as a band again. The rehearsals went VERY well for us. Stu flew in from Vancouver on Monday the 3rd. The very first day Stu had learnt about 11 songs! He actually sang them all and we were surprised by that. By weeks end, he had most of the kinks out and we are sounding pretty tight. Stu has a really great high falsetto voice, which has some Rob Halford influence in it. The high parts on "Buried In Oblivion" are no problem for him and he is nailing all the parts like a pro! Another bonus is his death vocals. Stu has no problem hitting all the clean vocals and then switching into some death voices as well. This diverse style is going to work well within the band.

To top it all off Stu has a great attitude and it an all around cool guy. Stu will be performing with INTO ETERNITY on all future shows, including our upcoming tour with AMORPHIS in March. Hopefully everyone will come out to support the new line-up. I promise it won't disappoint!

Keep it Metal!"

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER Issue Update
- January 5, 2005

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER vocalist Trevor Strnad has issued this huge update:

"Hey kids, we've got a brand new site for that ass. It's been a long time in the works, but lucky enough for us we've found ourselves a kick ass Webmaster by the name of Mike. You can contact him with any ideas/concerns for making this shit better. We should finally be up to date, as Dave and I are finally on the goddamn Internet again.

For those of you who are wondering what blast master Cory Grady has been up to, he has now joined the ranks of the world's most dangerous band, PREMONITIONS OF WAR. Stop by their site and show Cory some love.

We just got back from a tour of Europe with MRDUK, NAPALM DEATH, FINNTROLL, VADER, and BELPHEGOR. It was a pretty interesting experience. Big horns to anyone that came out to show BDM love.

Just before we head into the studio, we have five days of support for the almighty SUFFOCATION. CATTLE DECAPITATION and BEHEMOTHwill also be thrashin'. Look to the shows section for more details.

As for now, we're recording a new demo to show to Metal Blade and Andreas Magnusson. It will only exist on the lost form of Mini Answering Machine cassettes, so you goons won't be able to see what we are up to until its time to strike. The new album, "Miasma", is now halfway written, and completely destroys anything we've done prior. We are very proud of the new songs, and are sure that our fans will not be disappointed. The direction of the new shit is noticeably heavier and far more intricate than our previous work. The album will be recorded in a dark scary basement of Richmond, VA, beginning March 10th with Andreas Magnusson (of Scarlet fame) at the helm. The album will then be mixed in April with the infamous Eric Rachel at Trax East studios, NJ. If all goes as planned "Miasma" will be available in the early summer months. We'll be out with KING DIAMOND and NILE before the disc drops, kicking off another year of perpetual touring by your favorite road warriors.

The heavily delayed "A Cold Blooded Epitaph" is now off at the pressing plant, and should be available in about two months. I apologize to those of you who have been waiting for this deluxe release. It has been Re-mastered by Scott Hull, and features live bonus tracks (which will be the worlds first recorded glimpse at The Zach Dahlia Murder) and a live video from a killer set at The Palladium in Worchester, MA. The brilliant Mark Riddick, who finally captured the essence of THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER in visual form, handled the cover art. We are 200% satisfied with the end result, and are eager to have them in our dirty paws. We'd like to thank Guy at Blackmarket for being so patient and helpful with the project. We are excited to be a part of such an amazing young label.

For those of your who are artistically inclined and looking to make a few bucks, we are in dire need of some shirt designs. Send us your resumes. Serious inquiries only therocklock@hotmail.com.

We'll be working on the site constantly, and should have a web store up in a bit, as well as some new photos.

Stay Metal,

Trevor"

VEHEMENCE Search For New Vocalist
- January 5, 2005

VEHEMENCE have issued this message:

"VEHEMENCE is now in search for a new vocalist. Longtime vocalist/lyricist Nathan Gearhart has stepped down due to family obligations, and we now need a powerful frontman to fill his shoes. He will be missed, but at the same time we are excited to have some new blood in the band. We are currently looking for someone who will be fully committed to shows, practices, and tours and must have great stage presence. We DO NOT want a Nathan clone, and would prefer someone who can bring something new to our sound. No matter what 'scene' you are from, if you are an extreme metal vocalist, get in touch! The goal is to expand, and reach a wider audience with our new vocalist so if you are interested, please email us at vehemence@vehemence.com.

Sincerely,

SLAYER - Tom Araya Talks About Dimebag's Murder
- January 5, 2005

SLAYER mainman Tom Araya recently spoke with Brian Davis from KNAC.com about "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott's murder last month, the upcoming SLAYER album, touring, and several other topics. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

KNAC.com: Do you have any ideas for the new album?

Araya: No, I have to really focus, especially when I'm writing because I wanna be good at it. [Laughs] And I wanna be sure I'm using the words the way I want to use them, because to me there's a lot to it. They'll fit the phrase that you're putting them in, but they're also to paint a picture. I have a bunch of stuff written that we haven't used, but I haven't sat down and really focused on what to put toward the album.

KNAC.com: Jeff has his thing with war, and you have a kind of fascination with serial killers. What is it that intrigues you about them?

Araya: Just how we could do something like that to each other. Why? Im trying to see where these guys are coming from so maybe Ill understand. Its always kind of intrigued me... Why? I read a book recently by a psychiatrist who was able to interview a few serial killers and she had a thesis on how you could figure these people out. And she thinks that there are things that could tell you whether someone has the potential to do that.

MEGADETH - Is The End Near?
- January 4, 2005

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted this message on the band's official website:

"Droogies!

While 2005 brought much suffering and sadness to many people at its end, I hope for most of us here that were separated from such tragedy, that you had a terrific 2004.

My heart still goes out to the Abbott family, the families who have lost loved ones in the ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also the many millions of people around the world that had their family or a friend touched or worse by the Tsunami.

Trivial as it may seem after saying that, I look forward to great 2005 with you all, near and far. As this final MEGADETH record and tour run its course, I have met or "re-met" many of you Droogs out there; some new, some old, some crusty.

MEGADETH plans on doing the Euro/UK tour as you know, then tentatively to Japan and Oz, and hopefully South America, to be finished with one last victory lap of the states this summer.

Since this is the final year of MEGADETH, it is also fitting to remind you that it has been twenty of the best years (and hardest) of my life. Yes, KIMB came out just a wee bit less than 20 years ago and by this May, it will have been our 20th anniversary. It is also fitting that a complete lyric book come out of all my songs, which will be out in the late spring/early summer.

On a good note, I got to wish David Ellefson Happy New Years last night (I called him). Nothing more to report there.

This month we, Glen, Shawn, Jimmy, and myself will play a 30th anniversary party for ESP, as well as us all roaming around Winter NAMM. I know I will at least see El Duce there! Also, there will be a new video shot for "Of Mice And Men" since it is going to be the next single.

Then it is off to Ireland, and I cannot wait to do this last tour of Euro/UK, especially with DIAMOND HEAD. We are still trying to add 8 more shows to the end so that it is a round number of 30 shows over there and will keep you posted.

My move is almost over and shortly after that, I imagine the creative juices will start flowing for what GOD holds in store for me next with my career.

It is with great emotion that I write this post. I feel I can never tell you what you all have meant to me over the last twenty years. Especially people like Dave McRobb, all my beloved SLs, Heather for her columns, Doug Brooks and George Broadfoot from years before, Brian Kruger, Mike Graben and all of the old web crew, and each and every one of you Droogs new and old.

Please make sure to say hello if you see me out on the "Killing Road" as I would like to thank you personally for your support over my career.

Love and Bruises,
Mustaine sez Happy New Year!"
