LAMB OF GOD - New Album Slams White Suits
- September 29, 2004
MTV have posted this report on LAMB OF GOD:
"One morning in May, Lamb of God guitarist and lyricist Mark Morton awoke in the early afternoon, flipped on the TV and watched a news report that turned his blood to ice. A 26-year-old Philadelphia telecommunications contractor named Nicholas Berg had just been beheaded by Islamic militants in the latest episode of bloodshed in the Middle East.
"Every time you think things are as bad as they could possibly get, there's a dude getting his head sawed off," Morton said, recalling the incident with disgust. "We've got all these rich white dudes in suits playing Risk with 18-year-old American kids who are dying over there, and it feels like Armageddon. It seems like we're bringing on our own demise."
The rage, fear and cynicism that have become a part of daily life since U.S. forces engaged in a war with Iraq played a major role in the savage fury of Lamb of God's third album, Ashes of the Wake. The disc, which entered the Billboard albums chart two weeks ago at #27, combines the brutality of death metal, the raw intensity of thrash and the mathematical precision of prog-metal. And Lamb of God bind their music together with the kind of political content usually reserved for hardcore.
The instrumental title track contains a sound bite of a soldier saying, "I honestly believe that we're committing genocide over here. I don't believe in killing civilians." At this year's Ozzfest, singer Randy Blythe repeatedly urged fans to vote Bush out of office. However, as politically aware as Lamb of God seem to be, Morton insists they're not out to educate or enlighten their audience.
"We're not a political party or a history class," he said. "We're just always true to ourselves, so we say what's on our minds. If other people happen to feel the same way, then that's great. But we don't have an agenda, and we're not out stumping for the Democrats. It's about the five of us. That's it."
Clearly, the unrelenting barrage of Ashes of the Wake was largely a result of the political climate in which the quintet created the album, but the terse, wired tone of the LP was equally influenced by the hair-raising deadline imposed by Lamb of God's new major label. Soon after the 2003 release of the incendiary As the Palaces Burn, they were signed by Epic Records, which demanded an album in 2004. Since they already had tour commitments for Palaces, Lamb of God were left with just six months to write and record the new album before they departed for Ozzfest. And since they had spent an average of 18 months just writing each of their previous albums, they were overwhelmed by the Herculean task they faced.
"It was incredibly stressful and emotional and draining, and I think you can hear it in the songs," Morton said. "I totally freaked out and was falling apart because we had to do everything so quickly, but once we accepted it, it was almost liberating. We had to trust ourselves as players and artists and really believe that we could do this. We couldn't second-guess ourselves at all. And we rose to the challenge and wrote our best record."
Ironically, one of the most widely hailed metal records of the year was written by a band whose primary songwriters hardly ever listen to metal anymore. Sure, they grew up on Slayer and Metallica, but these days Morton favors hip-hop and alt-country, second guitarist Will Adler is a closet pop fan, and Blythe is mostly into hardcore. "I think that's one of the coolest things about us," Morton said. "We listen to such different things, so by the time everybody brings their influences to the table, it's a real melting pot. You may not hear any hip-hop in there, but some of the vocal cadences and the way we use drop beats and some of the time signatures definitely come from stuff I listen to, like Jay-Z and Kanye West."
It's hard to picture the grimacing Morton grooving out to West's The College Dropout while Adler jams to something by No Doubt. Just the thought might be enough for some haters to question the Lamb's credibility — none of which bothers Morton in the least.
"We write our own book, man," he explained. "Nobody ever thought we could get this far, and we did it anyway. We were doing it before anyone wanted to interview us, and we'll be doing it when they all don't care anymore."

ARCH ENEMY - New EP On The Way
- September 29, 2004
ARCH ENEMY will be releasing a new EP, entitled "Dead Eyes See No Future", on November 15 in Europe and on November 30 in North America through Century Media Records. The EP is a mixture of live tracks and cover versions and was initially released in Japan only while the band were touring there a few months ago. Since then, an extra live track, "Heart Of Darkness", has been added, as well as the video for "We Will Rise".
Here is the track listing:
01. Dead Eyes See No Future (from "Anthems Of Rebellion")
02. Burning Angel (Live in Paris 2004)
03. We Will Rise (Live in Paris 2004)
04. Heart Of Darkness (Live in Paris 2004)
05. Symphony of Destruction (MEGADETH cover)
06. Kill With Power (MANOWAR cover)
07. Incarnated Solvent Abuse (CARCASS cover)
08. We Will Rise (Enhanced video clip)
Guitarist Michael Amott had this to say: "The decision to make this EP started to come about after we played a particularly intense, sold out show at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris in April, which we were taping. Most of the recording came out sounding great, so we thought we should give you guys the chance to own a slice of prime live Enemy, especially for all the people who haven't seen us play yet!! The inimitable Andy Sneap was on hand to do the actual live recording, and he also mixed the whole EP at his studio (where we did all the sessions for "Anthems...").
The cover songs on the EP - we had a real blast working out our take on these classic metal tunes, especially the Carcass song... I was expecting to find it kind of strange to play it with the AE guys, but I have to say they made an amazing job of it - in my not-so-humble opinion!! Being a huge fan of Megadeth, I must admit it's a tough task to better the original there...we just did a very, very heavy version of the song. The Manowar track turned out unexpectedly brutal, this was always a favourite song of mine from my early 'heavy metal daze"! I love the speed and intensity of this song - it sounds very Arch Enemy with lots of guitar shredding! So a fairly spur-of-the-moment idea actually turned into something good enough to let you guys get your teeth into it - enjoy!!"
ARCH ENEMY will be heading out on the road in North America and Canada on the "Headbanger's Ball" fall 2004 tour along with CRADLE OF FILTH, BLEEDING THROUGH and HIMSA. Check out thge confirmed dates here.
Michael Amott commented: "Well - finally! Back to the US again!! After some of the problems we had earlier this year in America, it's a relief to know we'll be back again before the end of the year to shred it up for all you maniacs one more time! It'll be a real blast coming out with Cradle of Filth, not only will it give us a chance to play to a slightly different audience, but it'll also be like a family outing for the drumming brothers Adrian (CoF drummer) and our very own Daniel. Obviously Daniel's going to enjoy showing Adrian how it's really done every night - we'll see!! We're also pleased to get a chance to get back to Canada again - we had such a great response last time we played there with Iron Maiden, we wanna see if they still remember us!".

MEGADETH On Rockline This Coming Monday
- September 24, 2004
RocklineRadio.com has posted this message on their website:
"Too long. Way too long since we've been given a new Megadeth album. That has all changed with the release of "The System Has Failed" which became available September 14th. Now on the next ROCKLINE Dave Mustaine, and perhaps a few more of the lads, will join us to discuss the long wait, Dave's injury from May of 2002, the current line up and the "Blackmail The Universe Tour". If you can't wait to speak with Dave, check out Megadeth.com and get the whole scoop beforehand. The single, "Die Dead Enough", has set the stage for the band's return to their rightful place as Rock icons and puts them back on ROCKLINE where we share a tremendous history with one another, including their first ever live acoustic performance on U.S. radio a few years ago.
Their tour begins October 23rd in Reno and wraps November 20th in Minneapolis. Hopefully, there will be plenty more to follow. Dave remains the leader and front man (he IS Megadeth) and will be joined on stage by Glen Drover on guitar, James MacDonough on bass. Nick Menza retains his position as skinbanger and timekeeper. If you've not heard the new album, brace yourself for politics, paranoia and piss and vinegar; just the way we like our Megadeth. The album is garnering universally good reviews and we can't wait to share it with you and find out all about it and the behind the scene information. Don't miss Megadeth, exclusively on the next ROCKLINE!"
In other MEGADETH news, the band's new album, "The System Has Failed", has broken onto the charts at various postions in these countries:
Canada - #10
Sweden - #14
U.S.A. - #18

VADER Cancel Upcoming North American Shows
- September 23, 2004
VADER have been forced to cancel the upcoming North American tour with CANNIBAL CORPSE, NAPALM DEATH, GOATWHORE, and KATAKLYSM due to an injury suffered by vocalist/guitarist, Peter Wiwczarek, while on tour. The band's manager Mariusz Kmioek has released this official statement:
"We are sorry to inform everyone that during Scandinavian tour (October 2004) Peter has suffered from a minor spinal injury (vertebra-related) and will have to undergo a procedure to set things right (1 week at hospital and 2 weeks of rehabilitation). The only possible date to enter the hospital and fix it is in October, so we have decided on not going on our US tour! Our first idea was to schedule the procedure at hospital next year, but it would be big risk for Peter's health.
We'd like to apologize all people - Metal Blade USA, First Row Agency, CANNIBAL CORPSE and their booking agency, NAPALM DEATH and all maniacs - we are very sorry and we'd like to thank everyone for all their hard work in booking and arranging this tour! It's the first cancelled tour in our long (18 years) activity, and it's really a shock for us!
Let's keep our fingers crossed everything will turn out OK."

FALCONER Announce New Members
- September 21, 2004
FALCONER guitarist Stefan Weinerhall has posted this message on the band's official website:
"On the 18:th and 19:th of September we held an audition for the few guitarists we had chosen out from those who had applied for the job. We played one song from every album.
On the evening the 18:th we went to see Kristoffer perform with one of his coverbands "Copycats" for a full house. It can't be only work. Name a rehearsal weekend with Falconer where everyone is feeling OK on the Sunday. Ha ha!! We never learn!
When we tested the last guitarist he played the songs exactly as I did. Every boing, pling and shugga-shugga was there. But we wanted a good solo guitarist and when he started to do his solos the rest of the band got lost leaving Jimmy to be the only one playing correctly. Hmmm, ehrr well. It really just took only about 20 seconds into the first song and I watched Kristoffer's face: yup it was a fact, Jimmy Hedlund was the guy.
SO WHAT IS ON THE AGENDA NOW?
We'll have a full band to rehearse the new album with but also to rehearse some more old material with Jimmy. All the songs to the next album is written and most of them rehearsed. The title of the next album will be "GRIME VS. GRANDEUR".
It feels like it's "for real" now.
Stefan, 21/9-04"

ICED EARTH Forced Off The Road Until Summer 2005
- September 21, 2004
ICED EARTH mainman Jon Schaffer has posted this message on the band's official website:
"Hello All!
It's time for an update once again. Things have been pretty crazy between the awesome news of being a future father for the first time, the back problems and the numerous doctor visits; MRI's, EMG's and a load of other tests, a new business that has taken off and grown much quicker than expected (Spirit of 76 Collectibles), the Gettysburg DVD, Iced Earth's day to day, Demons & Wizards, a 4 figure miniature series called "The Great Americans" and another line-up change.
Unfortunately for me, the guys in the band, the crew, the label, and more importantly the fans, we will not be touring Europe or anywhere else until summer 2005 due to my serious lower back problems and the fact that I'll be a father in early March. We plan on playing many of the big European festivals next summer and they are being booked at present.
This is the main reason that Jimmy is no longer with Iced Earth. He called me after it was obvious that I.E. would not be touring for a while and asked if I would mind if he auditioned for Megadeth. I wished him luck and told him that if he can go out and earn money by playing bass he should do it. This is a tough business and it's not easy for musicians to make a living when they're in an underground band that is not touring. That's why so many musicians that are in bands and have records out also have day jobs. Tim, Bobby and I wish Jimbo all the best!
As for the Gettysburg DVD, Mark Briody was just here a few days ago and it's looking very cool. We had a brainstorming session for some of the final touches and we are both very excited about the project. We are shooting for a January release date at this point. Mark and I both feel that this will be one of the most, if not the most unique releases a metal band has ever done. It'll be a double disc packed with all kinds of cool stuff. It will have the Gettysburg video in 5.1 Surround (both the metal and theatrical mixes) and in stereo. There will also be a battlefield tour where I interview and discuss the battle with a licensed battlefield guide as we walk through the events of the three days. There will also be a very in depth and entertaining interview between Mark and myself. Also, it will have the "When the Eagle Cries," "The Reckoning (Don't Tread On Me)" and if we get it finished in time, a video that is going into production very soon for "Declaration Day."
I think in all it will be over 3 hours of material to check out. It's going to be killer.......
Fortunately my back situation will still allow me to write and record over the next months. Hansi and I will be getting together in October to write and go over arrangements on the new material that we have finished. This CD will be a big step forward for us. I have always seen D&W as a special kind of monster that we've created and the new material will propel us beyond what was accomplished with the first CD. Some people have wondered if it will be possible for us to beat the first one since we had a Grammy nomination in Germany and because it was such a big success worldwide. All I can say is that we don't concern ourselves with that stuff. We have fun together and we do it on our terms and no one else's. It will rule, that's all I know!
Tim and I will also be working on new IE material over the course of the next several months. I'm looking forward to what we can do when we put our heads together. We have great chemistry together on a personal level and it will surely come through in the music.
My newest venture is a 4 figure miniature series called "The Great Americans." This will be an ongoing series that will be dedicated to those personalities who have had an impact on all of our lives and who have served and made a difference in this world. The figure set is a very limited, highly collectible, 54mm or 32nd scale pewter figure that is hand painted to amazing detail. The figures are designed by myself and Andy Neilson of King and Country and manufactured by King and Country exclusively for Spirit of 76 Collectibles. You can check out pictures of this awesome 4 figure set at www.spirit-of-76.com and place your order, if so desired, by following the instructions there.
Well, as you can see I'm a bit busy, and this is just what it's like when I'm in a bit of a quandary with my back problems and in a period of "down" time. It's normally a much more intense work schedule............
One thing that I want to be clear here is that these changes will have little or no effect on this band. When I'm healed and ready to roll again we will be back with a vengeance, tighter than ever, with a world class line-up. On that you can depend. So, to the Iced Earth fans out there; don't fall into the trap of rumors and BS that runs rampant when change occurs. Every change that has happened thus far has been for the better; everything happens for a reason.
Wish me luck through the next months of intense procedures and therapy on the back, I'll need it.
With that I bid you a fond farewell, for now...........
Jon Schaffer"

EXODUS - South American Tour On Hold
- September 17, 2004
EXODUS have confirmed that their South American tour has been put on hold until October. Here is guitarist Gary Holt's statement on the matter:
"The tour has been postponed until October due to the fact that John Miller is an insane idiot and had one of his mental breakdowns the day before we were to leave. We knew he has a history of this kind of shit but we never knew it would happen this quickly. It usually takes him longer to shoot himself in the foot. It had nothing to do with Zetro not going. All shows were on until John self-destructed. I will be updating everyone soon on the details of the South American tour. But please don't blame the promoters, there were just too many changes to make to try to pull this off and we had no intention of going down there and embarassing ourselves with John Miller, so my apologies to our fans in South America. We will return soon."

IRON MAIDEN - Complete "Early Years" DVD Details
- September 17, 2004
IRON MAIDEN have posted this press release on their official website:
"The History Of IRON MAIDEN - Part 1; The Early Days" double DVD is to be released this autumn on EMI appropriately almost exactly 25 years to the day since the band first signed to the British label.
"The Early Days" is a unique collection of archive material packed onto two DVDs that covers the beginnings of the band's career from the struggle to get gigs in East End pubs through to becoming within just five years a band capable of headlining arenas anywhere around the world and achieving this without any radio support to speak of at any time.
This isn't simply a band history but more the intense and personal voyage of a remarkable group of individuals who shared one vision and worked hard to achieve that goal without any compromises along the way. It also demonstrates the band's unique relationship with their fans, the foundation for which was laid right back then …at the beginning.
The first DVD contains nearly two hours of archive MAIDEN live concert rarities that demonstrate the energy and power that propelled them to the forefront of World Metal.
The first program of DVD1 is MAIDEN's first ever concert video "Live at The Rainbow" which was produced by EMI back in 1980 shortly after they were signed and was one of the first ever concert VHS releases. This title has not been widely available for some time so fans can now see the band fronted by Paul Di'Anno singing such classics as "Killers" and "Phantom Of The Opera".
The rest of the footage on DVD1 consists of two shows neither of which has ever been fully available. "Beast Over Hammersmith" was filmed at the beginning of the "Beast On the Road" tour that to many fans at the time was the first introduction to Bruce Dickinson. Songs like "Hallowed be Thy Name" and "Number of The Beast" have proved to become regular features in the MAIDEN live set since this was first recorded in 1982 and now thanks to some modern reconstructive work fans can enjoy the highlights from this rare footage.
To complete the first disk is "Live At Dortmund", a massive concert in Dortmund in December 1983 originally filmed for German TV with MAIDEN headlining a stellar metal bill as part of their "World Piece Tour". Originally the show was broadcast live across Europe but has not been seen since until now. Research into the footage shows that all the original film has since been destroyed so this is truly now a rare piece of MAIDEN history.
DVD 2 includes the feature-length (90 minutes) documentary titled "The Early Days" with extensive interviews and photographs and historical detail.
The documentary which forms the basis for the title contains over 90 minutes of extraordinary interviews with the colourful cast of characters involved with MAIDEN over this early period - current band members, a whole host of ex band members, managers, agents, journalists, photographers, EMI execs past and present, crew, promoters, fans - all of whom have their own perspective of the events and process that led up MAIDEN's worldwide success, and the fun and hard work involved.
It chronicles their early struggles in the mid to late '70s in London's East End where the hardest thing was just keeping a line-up together for more than a couple of pub gigs, through the early successes of their eponymous debut album and "Killers", their first world tours, the colossal impact on the rock world that was "The Number of the Beast" and through to the end of their first full headlining world tour - "Piece of Mind" - in 1983.
A very honest and revealing (but also entertaining) insight into just what it was like early on in the world of Eddie and MAIDEN, it's also a guide book to the problems faced and attitude and talent needed to get a band off the ground and to the pinnacle of worldwide success — and then to keep it there!!! It is a fascinating and compelling story for any music fan.
Also on Disk 2 is a 30 min TV Documentary by LWT shown in 1980 on the rise of heavy metal featuring the band and footage of them performing at The Marquee in 1979 and an insight into the new breed of music fan that arose out of the ashes of the punk era.
Possibly one of the rarest items on "The Early Days" is a 45-minute home video recorded by the band of them performing at The Ruskin Arms in East London. This footage was originally feared lost forever however by complete chance a surviving copy was found in Steve Harris' home and the delicate tape was processed and now included in its entirety. With the exception of a very short clip used in "12 Wasted Years" this has never been seen by anyone except the band themselves making it such a rare gem for the collector.
Extras include rare TV appearances like their first "live" performance on "Top of the Pops" and "Rock and Pop" on German TV, special photo gallery revealing never before seen personal pictures taken by the band and crew and a thorough overview and detail of all the bands artwork, tour programmes and imagery both on tour and their studio releases, plus of course some hidden goodies.
"The Early Days" is the first of what will eventually become a series of DVDs to be released over the coming years. Each release will extensively cover a period of the band's career to become a collection of not only re-mastered footage but also previously unavailable and unseen material taken directly from the band's own personal collections, along with extensive interviews.
Says Steve Harris, "We haven't had any of our original live videos available for some time so when we started looking at this project we thought lets make each DVD a real document of not only the shows but everything around that time. Everybody has been digging through the archives to make this the most complete it can possibly be and I'm really proud of the end result.
A lot of the footage we'd thought had been lost for good like the home video of the Ruskin Arms. Both disks contain some real collectors stuff. For example we filmed the first Hammersmith Odeon shows with Bruce but because of various lighting issues we never felt that it was really good enough to use. It just never really captured the excitement of show or the spectacle that it was - but by the time it was on film we could do nothing about it. However with technology being what it is now we've revisited and repaired some of the problems with the original masters to get it to a point where we can finally keep our fans happy by making it available."
"I have to say that I've really had a lot of fun recalling the early beginnings and we've managed to interview just about everybody who was ever part of MAIDEN from the very first line up in 1975 through to the band that everyone knows now. I found things I thought I had lost over the years and sometimes the smallest thing can remind you of exactly why you started doing this in the first place and the struggle everyone went through. I think the fans are going to love this."
Plans are currently being put together for IRON MAIDEN to play some festival and stadium dates next summer and bring the "Early Days" back to life. The band will be linking in the look and feel of their beginnings in the stage set as well as performing some classic tracks from that time which haven't been heard live for a while!! Dates will start to be announced in the near future.
Says manager Rod Smallwood, "On reviewing all these great shows it just reminded us all of the great songs that the band have in their repertoire. It's always difficult when touring a new album to include too many of the older songs which the fans always ask for as the band would end up playing for four or five hours! The plan for next year is to recreate the power and energy and look of their early shows and eventually continue this idea with each subsequent DVD release."
The next in series will be the spectacular "Live After Death", which will cover the bands legendary four sold out shows at Long Beach Arena in 1984 through to the Somewhere in Time tour in 1987.

HAMMERFALL - Update From The Studio
- September 17, 2004
HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak has posted this studio update on the band's official website:
"The first week of recording have gone extremely smoothly! Anders played very well - as usual - and Charlie has managed to make the drum sound even better than on "Crimson Thunder"! Magnus has recorded all the bass guitar now, as well, so things are progressing really nicely; the ground work is laid, and in a most promosing way, indeed. We still have a long way to go - more than two months remain until the mixing and mastering is all done - but I have a great feeling about this!
I have started writing a diary of all the important and unimportant stuff that I deem appropriate for web publishing is included, and it will come with fresh pictures, like you are used to.Hopefully, Fredrik can put it up over the weekend, so you can read all about the happenings during these first two weeks. Stay tuned!

EXODUS Guitarist Clears Up Vocalist Rumors
- September 15, 2004
EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt has posted this message on the band's official website regarding rumors going around about the replacement for recently departed vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza:
"I just wanted to clear up rumours about who is going to be our next singer. The answer to that is I do not know. There is a lot of speculation that we've already selected John Miller for the job and that is not true. While he will have every opportunity to secure the gig , as of right now he is filling in for us in South America, and in doing so is doing us a huge favor by helping us out when we were in a bind.
We will be holding auditions in the near future but in the meantime I am going to continue writing songs for the next record. Some people have questioned my intentions, saying that I am looking to cash in but finding some sort of flavor of the month or something. Come on. Be real. I have no delusions about suddenly selling five hundred thousand records merely by switching vocalist. I live in the real world folks, and I am very content if I can pay my bills and buy the occasional knife or two doing what I love and still take care of me and my own.
But anyway, we will be putting out contact info soon about auditions, so anyone interested stay tuned!"
Holt has also sent this message to the band's South American fans, assuring them that EXODUS will complete their touring commitments:
"Just want to ease any concerns our fans in South America might have about our upcoming shows. All shows are confirmed and are a go! We will be playing our full set, all the classics and the new ones as well. I guarantee we will not disappoint! We are ready, willing and able my friends, and we will crush! I have been looking forward to returning to South America for far too long to let anything stand in the way! It has always felt like a second home to me and I wouldn't miss it for the world! See you all there!
Gary."

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER - Post-Tour Update
- September 15, 2004
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER have issued this post-tour update:
"The Cannibal Corpse tour was an amazing experience. Our record hasn't gotten out nearly as much in Canada as it has in the states, so we are thankful that we were finally given such exposure to the great north. Hello to the Neuraxis/Despised Icon and Ion Dissonance guys; the girls that sold us the mushrooms that broke Dave's tooth; Gene Hoglan for calling us "Daddio", Three Inches of Blood; Strawberry for showing me the might that is Malefaction; and all of our wonderful new Canadian friends. Also, good luck to our brothers in Severed Savior, who lost their new bus to a fire on their way home from the last date.
Next up was the all too brief tour with Goatwhore, Cattle Decapitation, and Watch Them Die. This tour was like a traveling circus. Cattle was a fucking riot as usual, and Travis (vocals), who had broken his hand on the first date of the tour, was addicted to smelling the rotten pizza smell that seeped from the end of his cast. We had met Ben previously through a few dates with Soilent Green, but it was awesome to meet the rest of the GW crew. Those guys can drink for real serious. Props to our new friends Watch Them Die… what a great group of people. Also if you are a grind fan, I highly recommend you check out Kill the Client's record "Wage Slave". We met these dudes in Texas, and they are the sickest grind band to walk the earth since Brutal Truth.
Last but not least, we played Strhessfest 2004 in Cleveland OH. We dressed up as characters from Street Fighter 2, so if anyone has pictures, please get a hold of us.
This brings us to the present. Unhallowed has been issued in a very limited vinyl pressing through Metal Blade records. The LPs look phenomenal, and are going fast. I've seen them carried by Lumberjack and Relapse. Also, The MTV2 Headbangers Ball comp should be out soon, featuring our song "Contagion".
The artwork for the A Cold Blooded Epitaph EP has been floating in limbo for some time now. We're considering going through someone else soon to get it out by the wintertime, hopefully. When it does see the light of day, it will be armed with some new live tracks featuring the great Zach Gibson.
We've been practicing quite a bit, and so far have written three and a half songs for the new record. It's amazing to finally have these songs and be able to gauge what the second album is going to sound like. The ante has been upped on all fronts; and Zach's contributions have been fucking incredible to say the least. One or two of these bad lads should be making their debut on the next tour. Speaking of tour, we'll have the Unearth dates up on this site as soon as they are set in stone. We'll be taking Pushead protégé Gideon with us as our merch whore, so please buy the man a drink. This tour will feature completely new shirt designs created by Dave and myself, so be sure to check them out. Also, for our local fans, we'll be playing a devil's night party with Fordirelifesake, Bang! Bang!, and Coalition at St. Andrew's hall. Be there. That's all for now. Stay metal."

ICED EARTH Bassist Joins MEGADETH
- September 11, 2004
James MacDonough has quit ICED EARTH to join MEGADETH as the band's new touring bassist. Here is what he had to say about the switch:
"Hey guys,
A while back I had heard that Megadeth might need a bassist so I contacted them via email and much later got a response to my suprise. Before I knew it I was on a conference call with Dave. I sent in some video of me playing a couple Megadeth songs and I got a call a couple days later. Everything with IE has been up in the air as far as touring so I told Jon about this when I got the first email back and being my older bro, he told me to go for it. Unfortunately I won't be able to play with IE in the future because this will be a very lengthy tour, but we'll see what happens down the road. I am keeping in touch with Jon and maybe something in the future will happen.
Megadeth has always been one of my favorite bands and have alot of respect for Dave and what he's done for music, I feel honored to have been picked for this endeavor.
On another note, you guys should really hear this album, I know how picky you bastards are but hopefully you will really dig it as I do. It definitely will make a statement, and I say bastards affectionately. I hope to see many of you on tour again soon. Take care in everything you do,
James"

ANCIENT Know How To Spell
- September 11, 2004
Norwegian black metallers ANCIENT have posted this message on their official website regarding the song "Horroble" from their latest album, "Night Visit":
"After numerous unintelligent comments, made on certain reviews written by evidently unintelligent people about the title of the song 'Horroble', off Ancient's new album 'Night Visit', the band would like to communicate officially that the title is indeed a PLAY ON WORDS. It is a mix between the word 'horror' and the word 'horrible' and it is a concept about a horrorific attitude / state of mind. The lyrics will explain this. The band is very aware of the correct spelling of the word 'Horrible'. Sorry about this remark, but the band thought it was obvious. Evidently, for some people it isn't..."

GOD DETHRONED Complete Recording Of New Album
- September 10, 2004
GOD DETHRONED has finished recordings for their new album, "The Lair Of The White Worm", scheduled to be released on January 25, 2005 through Metal Blade Records. The album was recorded at Berno Studio in Malmö, Sweden (July - August 2004) by Henrik Larsson and mastered at Franky's Recording Kitchen by Berthus Westerhuis. The beautiful cover artwork was created by Jacek Wisniewski (VADER, GRAVE, KRISIUN).
The new album contains more hooks than a fisherman's knapsack. It overrules all albums to date with loads of energy, power and aggression, but still never lets go of the memorable epic melodies that are always there. The guitar leads (a lot more than on "Into The Lungs Of Hell") are in the vein of Michael Amott, Bill Steer & Andy la Roque mixed with Slayeresque over the top frenzy!
The album will be released in a regular jewel case version, but also as a limited first edition double-Digipack, which will include a free bonus-DVD with the making of "The Lair Of The White Worm", and in depth studio report with all band members and producer Henrik Larsson, along with interviews with the band members telling about the past and present, how they got involved, their instruments and the passion of playing.
Here is the tracklisting:
01. Nihilism
02. Arch Enemy Spain
03. Sigma Enigma
04. The Lair Of The White Worm
05. Rusty Nails
06. Loyal To The Crown Of God Dethroned

CRADLE OF FILTH have posted this message on their official website:
"With the South American live dates not far away the intesity level is rising in the rehearsal room. We do have a few injury issues which are currently being sorted out but all is positive and moving ahead fast. Things are really picking up now for the release of 'NYMPHETAMINE'. The Resident Evil movie is out this week and the soundtrack is going down a storm. The video for the title track should be aired this week on Scuzz and Kerrang TV. Also, watch Scuzz on Tuesday night, 10pm, and see me and Dani present a special feature on 'The Top 20 Rock Star Death's', which we filmed in London this week. PARAGON - "Still A Heavy Metal Band"
- September 10, 2004
PARAGON bassist Jan Bünning has posted this update on the band's official website:
"Hi Bangers!
Just to make it clear: Of course we are still a HEAVY METAL and NO Death Metal band!!! I just said "lots of Death Metal LIKE growls"! There are only a few parts to make the vocals a littel bit more interesting. We also already did this on THE DARK LEGACY (THE AFTERLIFE). We have not tuned down our guitars, vocals still sound like vocals and not like a barking dog, we have melodic leads and everything you would expect from a classic Heavy Metal band. So no worries!
Buschi sang three more numbers - IMPALER which sounds a little bit like a vicous and slightly faster version of PALACE OF SIN, BEYOND THE VEIL which is a mighty doomer which was called BEFORE THE STORM before and our 10min epic MASTER OF THE SEAS which has a lot effects and choirs in it.
By the way - thanks to all the people from South America and the UK this time - it´s great to see that people also know us there as we don´t have proper distribution there.
Metal Forever!
Jan / PARAGON"

Former "Stay Hungry" Producer Slams TWISTED SISTER
- September 10, 2004
Well-known hard rock producer Tom Werman has lashed back at TWISTED SISTER over their comments regarding his collaboration with the band on their double-platinum album, "Stay Hungry".
TWISTED SISTER guitarist Jay Jay French recently commented on the band's upcoming remake version of their classic "Stay Hungry" album, appropriately entitled "Still Hungry": "Still Hungry is Stay Hungry - The Way It Ought to Be. It has an ultra-heavy sound, which is the way we wanted Stay Hungry in the first place. But at that time rock records had a thin, very midrange kind of sound and so Stay Hungry was recorded very lightly. We battled Atlantic Records and producer Tom Werman about it, but we lost."
Speaking to Eddie Trunk of the "Friday Night Rocks" show on New York's Q104.3 FM, Tom Werman responded to the band's comments:
"Initially, the band appeared to be quite excited about their double platinum record, but as with many bands, the story changes over time - first, Dee said I wouldn't "allow" "We're Not Gonna Take It" on the record, and generally slagged me for providing JJ with different amps, since it took us three full days to arrive at a basically acceptable rhythm guitar sound.
The producer has zero influence on the selection of recorded material for the record. He sequences it, but the label A&R has the last and only word on LP content. As for the rhythm guitar sound (the foundation of every good metal song), Jay Jay's live sound was not at all right for the record, and we spent three days until we found one that was barely acceptable. Our engineer was damn good, too.
Eventually, Jay Jay decided to revise history as well, and the complaints grew from not allowing a song on the record to "battling" the band about the "thin" sound.
Since these records were made twenty years ago, they are obviously going to be apparently bass-deficient, compared to today's recorded music. Dee Snider sat in on the mix and approved every note. Most producers operating in this genre at that time would simply not have allowed the artist to participate in the mix. Regardless of this fact, Dee and Jay Jay now condemn the mixes that Dee personally signed off on.
It seems to be routine for bands like MÖTLEY CRÜE, TWISTED SISTER and CHEAP TRICK to wait until twenty years go by, and then suddenly decide that their success was actually limited by the producer of their records, who "didn't capture their sound" and "didn't understand their music." Doug Morris called me personally to do him a favor and produce TWISTED SISTER. The band urged me to take on the project, even though Dee has alleged that I was "forced" on them by the label (patent bullshit).
It was a very difficult record to make, as most '80s metal band records were. It was by far the biggest record of their career, and Dee's personal choice of a different producer for the follow-up record led to a failure. Together with six other bands, I made the biggest record of their careers (all at least gold, many multi-platinum), but sure enough, here they come blaming me for holding them back. It's pathetic, really.
I'll be happy to discuss my mistakes - my worst records, the ones I made that didn't make it - I even issued a 2-CD set called "Tom Werman's Greatest Hits & Greatest Misses". The 2nd CD has all of my favorite productions of bands that didn't make it - none of us is perfect. But there is little doubt in my mind that I contributed very significantly to the success of each one of my platinum bands - TED NUGENT, CHEAP TRICK, MOLLY HATCHET, JEFF BECK, POISON, MÖTLEY CRÜE, and yes, TWISTED SISTER.
I probably should ignore the bullshit that they throw down, but I hate to see them get away with it. Dee Snider has always had a problem sharing credit with anyone. He's a one-man show, and it's distasteful. So there it is in a nutshell. Thoughts?
Thanks for letting me vent."

LAMB OF GOD - "Nu-Metal Sucks"
- September 9, 2004
Canada's Chat Attack scribe Pete Richards has produced this report on LAMB OF GOD:
"Metal is big now.
And Lamb Of God are now part of a handful of extreme metal bands to receive major label contracts recently, along with Shadow's Fall, Killswitch Engage and Hatebreed, which is recognition this type of music has never gotten before.
August 31 marked the first major-label release by Virginia blasphemers Lamb Of God with their new album Ashes of the Wake (Epic), the quick follow-up to 2003's critically acclaimed record As the Palaces Burn (Prosthetic).
"People are ready for angrier music," says LOG vocalist Randy Blythe before a sold-out show at Toronto's Opera House last week. The band had just wrapped up the summer's Ozzfest tour and are now headlining their own tour to promote the new album.
"Nu-metal sucks, so that's why that's dying off," Blythe says. "And I think with the socio-political and economic climate of the States, which of course affects the rest of the world — even Canada — people are ready for angrier music. I think people are ready for something that's real, not, you know, 'I did it all for the Nookie.'"
Lamb Of God are easily the heaviest band to sign with a major lately, and Ashes of the Wake is the soundtrack to the war. It's probably the band's most brutal album, combining death and black metal with old school thrash and new school hardcore, making nu-metal sound like music for babies. Fuck Slipknot — the real freaks listen to Lamb Of God.
"We were in Arizona a few shows ago," Blythe recalls. "We're playing and there's this guy with his arm around Mark and he's jumping up and down and Mark is trying to play, looking very pissed off. So I'm like, 'I gotta get this kid off of him before Mark smashes him with his guitar and we get a lawsuit.' So I go charging across the stage and as I get closer to the kid I realized he only has one leg and he's hopping up and down on his foot. Not only that, his colostomy bag is hanging down, flopping all on the stage. So I immediately stepped on the brakes, trying not to tackle him and not to step on the colostomy bag at the same time because it would have been fucking disgusting.""

DORO PESCH Interview Posted Online
- September 9, 2004
German metal singer Doro Pesch recently spoke to Greece's Metal-Temple.com webzine about her forthcoming AFM Records debut, "Classic Diamonds", which is scheduled to be released on September 20. Here are some excerpts from the interview:
Metal-Temple: "Well, can you tell me some things about its creation? How did you work together with UDO etc?"
Doro Pesch: "The idea was like...two people came and said it was a benefit thing and they asked if I wanted to participate and I said what is it and they said it had to do with the Metal Classic Night Orchestra and they were looking for some guests to sing classic Metal songs and I said that sounds good and I did want it in my life in year 2000 with the Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra and it was really good. But, you know, I was like very classical and these guys, and UDO, looked like headbangers and it sounded interesting, so we met and then we did a benefit festival and had arrangements and it sounded really good and the atmosphere was great and we played some other songs of mine and some other Metal songs and I thought that’s really cool and then we did it again with Blaze Bailey..."
Metal-Temple: "You were on tour with Bailey..."
Doro Pesch: "Yeah, we were on tour, we became great friends and he is a great guy. We played "Fear Of The Dark" together and the whole festival was good and it would be a shame not recording it. So, we started in January and recorded a couple of the classic songs, like "All We Are", "Fur Immer" and "Breaking The Law" of Judas Priest and I asked UDO if he wanted to participate and he said OK, let's check it out."
Metal-Temple: "What about the EP, entitled "Let Love Rain On Me"? You sing in Spanish and French there. Do you actually speak these languages or is this for these countries' market?"
Doro Pesch: "Little bit I can understand Spanish and French, I had the school stuff and then in Spain there are lots, lots of fans and then actually I had somebody form France and I had him to hear me and then translated it and we had another assistant, she is from Spain, and it wouldn't be possible to do it without all these people's help and I thought that maybe we can do it in every country with the native language. People have told me that Greek is very difficult but if I could do it in every country I would."

PAIN CONFESSOR Complete New Video
- September 8, 2004
Finland's PAIN CONFESSOR have posted this message on their official website:
"One hellish day of moshing and ravaging a woman in cold water is now behind us, sun has set and only thing left in our minds now is exitement. We are exited to see the finished video because today certainly let us believe there is some pretty metallish stuff coming out from all this.
We were fortunate to get such a great production crew as Vesa Vainio's Vasara Productions that has also done a video for Mokoma, one of the best thrashy metal acts hailing from Finland.
The rest of the week sees Vesa and his crew to patch up the video material and our guests at the Album Release Party @ Metropol, HML, shall see the premiere of the, hopefully, finished music video."
"Lake of Regret" comes off the band's debut album, "Turmoil", which is being released today (Sept. 8) through Megamania Records. You can download the track "Soul Eraser" from the album here (Mp3 - 8.8 MB).

EXTOL Reveal New Members
- September 8, 2004
Norwegian metallers EXTOL have posted this message on their official website:
"We are proud to present the new Extol members!
After our two guitarists (Ole and Christer) left the band in February this year, we pretty much found ourselves standing on bare ground in the search for new, dedicated members, but also in the direction to take musically. The vision of the band burned stronger than ever, and so we needed guitarists and songwriters who were willing to give their all for Extol and that would fit into the band on a more personal level as well.
It's therefore our privilege to announce Tor Glidje and Ole Halvard Sveen as the new, permanent guitarists in Extol. As many of you already know, Tor already contributed in Extol on bass and guitar throughout the Undeceived era, and both he and Ole Halvard are considered the masterminds behind the black metal cult act Lengsel and the super-energic rock-band Ganglión. We are deeply honored to have them in our unit and hereby we welcome them into the Extol-family.
The new line-up has proven very successful so far, as we have been working closely together the last five months on Extol's fourth full-length album. We are currently finding ourselves in Antfarm Studio in Denmark, where we are mixing the new material and adding the final touch to the album.

TRIVIUM Heading To The Studio Next Week
- September 7, 2004
Florida's TRIVIUM have posted this message on their official website:
"We head to Tampa 9/13 and will get started on our debut Roadrunner Records CD titled "Ascendancy" - we have between 12 – 14 songs ready for recording and have already done pre-production on most and had a chance to work with some of the new material on tour - which was cool.
We will head to Morrisound Recording in Tampa with Jason Suecof (who will be Producing our CD) Audio Hammer Studios, to lay down Travis's drum tracks – then we will head back to Audio Hammer Studios to record everything else. Once we complete the work with Jason – we will head over to the UK to work with Andy Sneap on the final mastering. Needless to say this will be a great experience – we are big fans of Andy's work and look forward to working with him.
We expect to be busy recording for the next couple of months - we will keep you posted on any news and information while in the studio. We will be updating the site periodically with news and pictures.
As always - Thanks for support - we will talk to you later."

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS In Mixing Mode
- September 7, 2004
SPIRITUAL BEGGARS guitarist Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY,ex-CARCASS) has posted this studio report on the band's official website:
"Well, after the fascinating reports from JB and Ludwig here at spiritualbeggars.com, I guess it's my turn to write some words about the ongoing creation of the new Spiritual Beggars album! :-)
Yeah, JB came down to Halmstad (he lives in Stockholm) and delivered and absolutely astonishing vocal performance, this guy can roar like a lion - then put a baby to sleep with his soft tone…and everything in between…he's so versatile and his voice has matured quite a lot since we did the last album together - it was a joy working with him again in the studio…hail JB!
As far as guitars go I really had a lot of fun recording the solos for the album, I tried to put something of true emotional depth in every song on the album (Yes I guess I am pretentious! And?). I hope you will enjoy them (and the rest of the bands great performances) when you hear it.
Ah yes, we still don't have a record deal sorted out for this yet, but there will be some news on that shortly I believe - our management is talking to various people and I am (somewhat naively maybe) hoping this album will be released before 2004 is over, if not - then early 2005 will have to do I guess! This will be the first album in like 9 years that we don't put out through the Music For Nations label (R.I.P) here in Europe - Our last record (2002's "On Fire") was our 4th and last album within that deal and we were not contracted for further albums with them when they closed down the label... So it's time to find a new home for the Beggars!
Ludwig and me will travel up to Gothenburg tomorrow to oversee the mixing of the album in studio Fredman (which will take about a week, if we don't run into any trouble!). Fredrik Nordström is the right man to mix this record. The songs sound really lively and exciting already, in their current un-mixed state - Fredriks mix will push this one over the edge and make it sound amazing. That is what he does!
Ok, I am signing off for now, I'll be back!"
Michael Amott"

EDGUY Begin Work On New Material
- September 7, 2004
EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet has posted this message on the band's official website:
"Hi there people, It's been quite a while since we talked. But just because you don't get any news doesn't mean that we are being lazy these days. We had a little summer break, which meant some of us have been on vacation and some of us have been working on new material. Anyway, we rehearsed some new stuff and it sounds great, but you're gonna get the chance to check it out next year, I think we're gonna be ready to enter the studio in spring 2005. The first stuff sounds - in my opinion - really pompous, flamboyant and bombastic, but of course that'll be a matter of arrangements. Of course there are some whimpy pussy mid tempo pop-metal like "Holy Water" ideas as well!
Anyway, now we are doing the final preparations for the forthcoming leg of the tour that will lead us to North- Central- and South America. New tourdates have also been posted. The reason why we always wait so long with posting new tourdates is that we wanna try to avoid posting dates that are not confirmed by our side yet. Unfortunately some dates as for example in Chile had been ready for confirmation and then been cancelled by the local promoter due to private reasons. Whatever the reasons are, we wish him all the best and hope that our German agency will find a way and come up with postponed dates in Chile. Mexico had been postponed as well, but it seems that shows will happen there in the middle of October. Keep checking the tour section. We'll always as try to keep you up to date.
For all our German Fans: We have made a last minute decision to play an end-of-tour-show (actually the tour will go on, but not in Germany.) to say thank you for your loyalty. It's gonna be on the 27th of November in our hometown of Fulda at the Kreuz-Club. Just hopping on stage, plug in and play for two hours, maybe we're gonna get the chance to play some stuff that we didn't play on tour. However, tickets are gonna be available for 15,- Euro from the 20th of September on, for tickets dial: +49 661 240230. So, that's it for now, I gotta go back working on my little keyboard and come up with some melodies that are in the back of my head.
Thank you all, have a wonderful week & cheeerzz,
Tobias!"

The remaining work will be done in Devin's studio in Maple Ridge (suburb of Vancouver). The SYL DVD is done and as posted last month, the release is set by Century Media for November 2nd. BELPHEGOR Prepare To Enter Studio
- September 7, 2004
Australian extreme black metallers BELPHEGOR have posted this update on their official website:
"BELPHEGOR are currently preparing to record their forthcoming studio album. On the 13th of September Barth, Sigurd, Torturer and Helmuth will enter the Mastersoundstudios in Germany again, to start working on the new blast-opus, together with producer Alex Krull. The 3 recording sessions will last 'til the 10th of November. In this 3 months ( Sept./Oct./Nov. ) the group is going to concentrate on their new album 100 percent and, for that matter, will not play any concerts in that period. The new album comes first of all.
First (work) songtitles are: Goatriech - Fleshcult, Crown Massacre, Anus Dei, Burn The Cross, Swarm Of Rats, The Cruzifix, Seth - Demon Of Death, Fornicationium Et Immundum Diabolus, The Stigmatized, ...
Vocalist/Guitarist Helmuth states: ...again we will break musical rules and borders and you can expect a very special, monumetal highspeed opus with violent twin-guitars and far more leads than on it's predecessor. Through LUCIFER INCESTUS we could learn a lot, concerning studio and equipment and this time we gonna use and seize it all. Again we've added a lot of new elements and reached the next level of composition and structure, without sounding less massive. The material, we are developing since Dec. ´03, has really grown during that time and the speeds/drumtakes are more varied than ever, from 130 beats to 180/210 (BLUTSABBATH and NECRODAEMON speeds) up to the typical 220/250 BELPHEGOR speeds , I think this is one of the most outstanding attributes of the still untitled jewel. Also we got a mighty 190 soundcollage, that even can do without any blastbeat, therefore the hardness and intensity are lethal, ...of course we got a hyper-blastattack at 260 bpm speed at start as well.
This Album is going to be another strong death/black metal massacre, Lucifer Incestus is the climax of our work so far, but #5 is going to be our Reign In Blood, so u demons,...be prepared."

HAMMERFALL Enter Studio Tomorrow
- September 3, 2004
HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak has posted this message on the band's official website:
"This is it! Tomorrow, we will begin the recordings of our new studio album in Denmark! After finishing the songwriting and rehearsing the material over the last week, I can honestly say I'm very, very excited! The feelings I get from the songs so far are heavy, metal, and HammerFall. ;-) Seriously, I think everyone will recognize the band in the new songs, but I do think some of them tend to be a bit heavier than we have done before. You will see (hear...) eventually, as will we. As usual when we are doing something, I will write a diary to chronicle the events. Keep an eye out for them in the Templar Area of this site.
The release date for the yet unnamed album is March 7th. The single will be out on January 31st. No idea what song that will be, or what other stuff will be on there, but we'll figure that out as we go. There will of course be another video to accompany the song. Joacim, Roger (who has done our last three vids) and I have had a couple of brainstorming meetings and we have come up with some very cool ideas for this. You'll see.
So, now I will enjoy my last day in Göteborg for quite some time by being out in the wonderful late-summer weather and in the evening catch Spider-Man 2 at the movies.
C-ya!"

KICK AXE Returns With New Studio Album

The band was originally formed in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1976 by Larry Gillstrom and brothers Victor Langen and Gary Langen. Ray Harvey soon came on board and by early 1978 the band relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia.
"There is no foreseeable end at the moment. Tasting it again is very enticing", Larry Gillstrom says. "We went into this without preconceived notions of how the music would sound. "Kick Axe IV" is very emotional and from the heart. We all got what we wanted out of the album."

W.A.S.P. - "Neon God: Part 2" Out September 28
- September 2, 2004
Having just completed a nationwide and European tour in support of the first act of the band's 2004 two-part concept tale, "The Neon God", W.A.S.P. is planning yet another run around the world to support the forthcoming conclusion of said epic, entitled "The Neon God Part 2: The Demise", which is scheduled for release through Sanctuary/Metal-Is Records on September 28.
Produced and mixed during this summer, frontman Blackie Lawless was ardent in his mission to make "The Neon God Part 2: The Demise" as potent and intense as its story dictates, so much so, that he was flying back and forth between venues and his Fort Apache studios in Burbank, CA during the first two weeks of the band's summer tour!
"The Neon God" addresses a tale of deep emotional quandary and revelation, the intoxication of power and the consequences of corruption. It is a story that everyone has experienced at one time or another - the need to belong, the quest for love, the desire for control, and the futility of vanity. Lawless, forthright and ever evolving as a musician and a human being, drew influence for the album's concept through extensive observation of the world and numerous soul-searching journeys through the deserts of America's Southwest. A second leg of "The Neon God World Tour" is anticipated to commence in early October.
